I've bought a Gallien Krueger 2000CPL Rack Guitar Preamp so I can play late at night using the heaphone socket in consideration of sleeping neighbours.

I want to try connecting the preamp to either of my amps and am wondering what the best / safe way to do so is. I gather that I can take a mono signal from the line out of the GK and am pretty certain I can feed this into the amps effects return, enabling the use of the combo as a 'power amp' and speaker [while bypassing the combos own preamp].

I could just try this but don't want to risk it unless I've had clarification - the GK manual is a tad vague and I have no manual for my Yamaha SR50-112...

You can also understand my reluctance to just merrily plug straight into my Mesa Boogie Trem-O-Verb...

Any help / guides appreciated!

Thanks in advance,

Mike

You'll be perfectly safe doing that. It'll either work or it won't and you can't do any physical damage to either unit. Make sure both the amp and preamp are switched off with volumes set to zero before connecting them. Then switch on, preamp first, then guitar amp. Depending on the design of the guitar amp, if the effects loop is comes after the volume control, the only volume controls you will have may be simply those on the preamp, so start at zero and slowly work from there. When switching off, turn off the guitar amp first, then the preamp.

Thanks for the confirmation DrKev! Never know how much to rely on findings in Google if specific setups aren't mentioned.

Cobbling info from different sites together brought me to the point I arrived at - it was just a case of getting a second opinion and where better than the trusty EBMM forum!

Will try it out later today using your powering up / down sequence and taking note of volume levels. Be interesting to find out if the volume on the guitar combo is used or made redundant by this hook up...

We'll soon find out!

Many thanks,

Mike

i know you have had this query answered - I thought that I would chip in.
I use a Pod XT sometimes into my Marshall sometimes into my Mesa.
I use the send return loop and have the amp/speaker emulation switched off on the XT using it for the wah wah/Compressor/overdrive delay.
It works just fine.

Cheers Spud,

Always good to have additional input from other users with similar setups / applications and how they run them.
