Guy's, I am expecting my first Musicman Stingray any day now - which is second hand and would like to get a pro to check it over. I have often read about 'setting' up a bass, exactly what can I expect from a pro shop to do for my Bass? They have quoted £25

If your Ray is used then I would think that's a very good idea however what you get for your money depends on who you go to.

For what it's worth I recently had my Bongo 5 fully set up by Joe White at J. White Guitar Workshop in Farnborough, Hants. He was recommended to me by several gutarists/bassplayers and it was worth every penny of the £70. He analysed my playing style and then set it up from scratch. As well as setting the neck, action, etc., he dressed all the frets, re-adjusted pick-up height. It is now a completely different instrument and a real pleasure to play.

Joe is a luthier of repute and makes some beautiful acoustic guitars, electric guitars and mandolins. I used to use the "pro" at a local music store but never again. Joe will do all my basses from now on.

Thanks for the good advice Dave, I must admit when I was quoted just £25 I was a little sceptical to say the least.

It is a 1988 Ray and has had at least two owners both Pro's but as I am almost a beginner I wanted to start with it as 'new' as possible.

Cheers,

Steve.
