Hey Jack. I guess at almost at the end of my journey. I've decided on a white pearl and a urethane poly which I'll be spraying in my buddy's body shop on Monday. Let me know if you have any suggestions before I head out for the mission =)

Thanks

Sounds good!

A regular oil based poly will work fine. You can even brush it on and water sand after a few coats. The issue I found......several times.....and haven't expanded on is that water based urathane does not resist water until it's completely cured. I first had issues after getting on 4 or 5 coats and water sanding. Peeled it right off and I had to start over. Later, a drop of water somehow got on it and it ate right through probably 15 coats and just about to the wood. Lots of build and sand and build and sand to fix it. With oil based, let it dry and just go to it as it immediately resists water.

I've done the oak stairs in my house with water based urathane and it worked great. But that's 2 coats and done. I'm sure I've got 30 coats on the guitar now.

I'm partly done with the pickguard and should probably take pix. I'm not sure the color is a match but I guess if I'm unhappy with it, I'll just make another in another color. The birch is naturally a lot more brown while the poplar is white/green. The guitar has no brown tone at all. I do have the 2 rotary switches in. Need to do the pot, the 3 way and wire the whole thing up and then it's almost done. I'm going to use self sticking clear laminating plastic where my pick would contact the pickguard. A little extra protection.

Oh....I need to find knobs and cut the rotary switch stalks and file in an indent for a set screw....small stuff.

Messed up the pix of the back of the pickguard.....aluminum shielded. Test fit on the guitar. Switches need to be cut down, filed for the set screws and wired in the back then put in the hold down screws, string and play.

I like it! Mine is ready but I am waiting on the transparent pickguard and I am still debating whether I should do more poly coats ...

Excellent choice. Props!

The vol/tone are volume for each pickup wired like a Les Paul. Each of the other switches are 6 way rotary switches. Hum/single coil A/single coil B and then reverse phase for each of those. JP signed back cover. :D I've played it and there are certainly a lot of sounds. At the next string change, I might change my mind and go with a single volume and 3 way pickup switch....not sure yet. I plan to play it out Sunday...... The forearm contour is absolutely great. Better than any guitar I've ever played!

.......I will likely play this for a while and then put it up for sale and do another one.....

Played it this morning. I was concerned going into it because with just the effects pedal and headphones, it seemed noisy. With the house system, it was quiet as could be. Good sounds....first couple songs were first bell-y/with distortion...used the hum and one single coil together....second was more distorted...used the same settings and the last 2 I was the acoustic guy, so went to 2 single coils and and acoustic sound on the pedal. Sounded nice.

:D

Well, I could not leave well enough alone. Just about a year later, I've done a complete redo. Thanks to F'ing for the pickguard and Glenn for the pickups and silent circuit. I didn't keep track this time, but finished putting it together over the weekend. Basically silo spec/silent circuit but modern strat switching. Copper shielding and on/off for battery.

Very cool! Love the look of the binding appearance. I think you just made me want to put the white pearl guard back on my Silo Special.

do you have any close ups of the body? Is that scraped binding?

I'll have to figure out my camera. Yah, some companies call it a scraped binding, others call it faux binding. It was a 45 degree angled bit on a router and enough balls to start cutting wood.....

I do like how it sort of makes the body look smaller.

I use it for rehersal tomorrow night and 2 services Sunday morning.
