Owning one and an uncle that was an excellant luthier is where I learned my tweaking.

He always compared them to a stump with a neck. Yeah he would say I can fix it but will it stay fixed?

Still if that rings your bell I have no problems as I know you don' t BP with someone that wants that misery.

Back on topic: as far as I remember, Pino used to play a 2-pickup MM with Paul Young. Should've been a Sabre and not a 'Ray, then.

Pino is the number one reference to prove that slapping on a fretless works great (just listen to Paul Young's "Won't you stay" with Pino slapping and popping through the chorus ...). Seen him doing that live as well, wheew ...

Sorry, but you're wrong. He played a 1979 Vintage Sunburst Stingray not a Sabre. He bought it in New York whilst on tour there with Jools Holland.

It was definetly a 79 single p/u sunburst.
He used it with Numan and when I saw him with Paul Young.
I had to leave after the third tune from Paul Young to go to my own gig.
But the opening act was Nik Kershaw....anybody remember him? He was incredible, He had John Giblin playing bass on tour with him(ex simple minds,BrandX)
Pino and Mick Karn gave me the inspiration to persue fretless bass more than Jaco did. another great fretless player is Guy Pratt..Toy Matinee, Pink Floyd
etc.

Yeah and I auditioned Big P back in the 70's when he changed from guitar to Bass.
He was playing in a band in the New Moon Cardiff called "Trapper". - he had one of those Gibson "Look alike" 6/12 double neck guitars. John Sloman was on vocals and "Muggsy" on Drums who went on to play with "Lone Star" (70's band not the 90's band!)

Oh and Pino didn't get the position.
He went on to become the most sought after session man and me .............

Saw him a couple of years ago after a gig in Cardiff, we had a good chat and a laugh about the audition.
He is a real nice guy.
