Hello.
I have registered just now.
I'm Korean Bass kid.

So sorry for my short english speaking.

Taking up the main subject.
I have two bass, MM stingray 4 string (3EQ) and Spector(euro).
former days, I had used more other bass, Yamaha, cort, fender, ibanez, etc...

Nowadays, I feel Musicman's sound(finger picking) is too dark than other bass.
Slapping sound is so fascinative and wonderful, but finger picking sound is two dark,
(I use the DR hibeam .105 strings)
second, sustain is short than spector and yamaha.

it is seems to be impossible than I fix it with controling the EQ on bass.

I wanna answer all of you, great bassists.
have you ever been felt like me?
Is it the original MM's sound style?
Can't i have more bright and clear sound?

plz, advise to me.

I wait for your exciting response.
Thank you.

Hello,

First, does your MM have a rosewood or maple board? I don't have much experience with maple fretboards, but generally speaking, it tends to be a little more clear and bright, while rosewood is warmer and deeper.

Second, maybe you have to replace your strings. When strings are too long strung on the bass, there isn't coming much sound out of them anymore. (Or at least, it isn't that bright anymore).

Third, maybe the sound of the onboard preamp isn't your thing. You can replace it with a preamp from another brand. (Instead of the whole preamp, you can also only replace the pickup).

Fourth, I'm Korean too :D . (I live in Belgium, though)

This are the first things that came up in my mind. Maybe other forum members can give you more advise.

You're certainly using the right strings for brightness, how old are they?
(I found hi-beams to be almost too bright for my liking - I use Sunbeams).

I'm a little stumped by your post; my rays are extermely
bright & clear sounding. Your problems w/sustain could
be a result of improper set-up, pup height, or string aging.
FWIW, I tend to boost my mids when I need longer sustain.

I replaced the string last month (about 30 days)

Greatly glad to see you.

The strings is under 30 days old.
DR, hibeam .105

and at last month,
the vetaran setted up my stingray,
I satisfy the pickup height and string's actions.

I almost not use mid and hi EQ.
when i pump the mid and hi, the sound is too "clang" , but not bright.
.........Clang in the dark..........
That is not same with other bass's hi tone.

anyway,
Thank you so much for you advise.

Same here, mine can be too bright at times, i've never found it to be too dark, unless I alter the eq.

Hi and welcome to the forum. :)

This may not be the solution you are looking for, but have you ever played a Sterling? The tonal qualities are different from the SR- it may be closer to what you are looking for. Sorry if this doesn't help....

What kind of amp are you using? Boost your highs and drop your lows a little to see if that will help. It may take a while to find the right EQ setting? Also, take your SR to a guitar store and try out some different amps. Hope this helps, and welcome to the forums. Doug

id say, lower the pickup just slightly. pickup height can affect your tone. then boost the hi's on the basses pre-amp. but just slightly. i mean a hair at a time. then id say try out a set or Ernie Ball Super Slinkies. i dont know a thing about dr's but the slinkies are pretty bright and very clear. and perhaps the smaller guage will take some of the dark out.

Yay - a fellow Korean!! Altho, i hav to say i'm actually a korean-australian - proud of both nationalities....

IMO it mite be your amp - fiddle wif your EQ settings...

about sustain - i also seem to have a sustain problem, but only on the E string - i think it my be my bridge setup - if i'm getting shorter sustain on JUST the E-string (particularly higher up on the fingerboard; sustain seems ok up until about the G#) compared to the other strings, wat shud i be changing? I have a low action, the same action as recommended in the Ernie Ball FAQs section...i need help please as well...

Welcome, James! I can't help you, as I don't have a SR myself (...yet :p), but I just wanted to welcome you to the board.
