Hello,
I just got a killer Stingray classic 4 string bass and I LOVE it!! I was looking around on line for info about it and couldn't find many or any with the same color as mine. Is the Retro Burst color a rare color? It's the one with the kind of brownish outer color instead of black. Any info on this would be really appreciated.
Thanks!

I have personally never heard of stingrays with a brown burst instead of black. Mayebe some pictures may help.

I believe that retro burst should be a 3 colour burst that contains a broader burst than the standard stingray burst colours. So if it really is retro burst there should be alot of black on your bass. Only the center around the pg would be brown.

On EB Rays, Retroburst and Sunburst are similar but distinct finishes. The Retro has a dark chocolatey brown colour around the edge of the body rather than a blackish finish. Both existed in the early Pre-EB days but I think they were just feferred to as Sunburst and depending on the lighting it could go unnoticed. BP has a 1976 in the Retro. I also have several pics of the Pre-EB finish but it appears to be relatively rare back then. As to the EB Retros, I can't comment on rarity but I have one :)

Yes, it does look like a regular sunburst finish until it gets in the light and then you can see that the dark part is actually brown. I don't have any actual photos of the bass but here are a few from the Musicman site and mine looks exactly like this one...

Thank you to everyone that has responded to my post. Still trying to find out if this is a rare finish. I just can't find any info on it and I never see them for sale in this color. Thanks again for all the help!

Retro was one of the first finishes available when the Classic series was introduced. Pretty sure it can't be ordered any more (but stand corrected). Customer Service wont give actual production numbers but I'm sure they will tell you when the finish was available and for how long. That should give you an idea.

Customer Service can be emailed direct. Great to deal with. They can also tell when your Bass was made by quoting the serial number:

Just got an email back from Musicman, here is what they said about the Retro Burst color of my bass...
"The color was released NAMM January 2011 and discontinued NAMM January 2013".
So it was only available for two years. Musicman is the absolute best at making great instruments and customer service! Thank you very much MM!!

FWIW TWIMC etc etc

If you want a clone of the bass that started this thread,
I just bumped into one, at a local shop, tagged $1300:

Parkway Music Store, Albany NY | The Best and Most Popular Music Store in New York

usual disclaimer ... no connection except for being a
very long term very satisfied customer.

BTW, shop is owned by two musicians and is operated
by about a dozen more. Good peeps. Tell them Golem
posted the heads up. They won't charge you any extra
for knowing me ;-)
