I've seen a couple of Stingrays with maple boards that look like they're flamed or marble or something. One picture of them is over at http://www.aplusguitars.com. Its the candy red w/ shell pickguard. I saw another at Guitar Center. But I was a the local store today and the maple boards were just regular run of the mill wood grain maple like Fenders. So what is the difference?

Yeah, its gorgeous. I'm normally a fan of solely Rosewood, and think Maple is disgusting, but I actually love this type. Is there a way to order them that way? Do they just come at random? I'm really GASing for a Stingray in Candy Red w/ shell pickguard and bird's eye maple. How truly dark is the translucent red. I've thought about getting that with the shell/maple instead.

I actualy came about mine because I had to send my 5 back to EB for a new neck. The original neck developed a small crack at the base starting from the truss rod adjustment and ending at the last fret. When I got the bass back, the bird's eye neck was on it. I could go on about EB's great customer service, but I'll save it for another post. As for the Candy Red - I prefer the Natural finish. I think it's worth the upcharge!!

So bird's eye maple is just luck of the draw? Man the Candy Red one is so gorgeous. I'm not too big on natural finishes. I so hope someday to find a vintage P-bass in Natural with a Rosewood neck, add black pearl pickguard, and some more modifications.
