Question about old MM guitars

I've been looking for a Silhouette fo a long time now and yesterday I was offered this baby in trade for my Petrucci:

She's the perfect Silho for me since she has a floyd, 24 frets, white finish and a Paf-PRO in the bridge. My only concern is from this picture that was taken from the neck joint:

It's not the same as the one in my JP7 and I imagine this means that it's an older model. I was just wondering if there's any detail I should be made aware of before buying one of these older Musicman axes.

Am I missing something? its a recessed neck plate which MM stopped doing.I dont see anything else

by trade do you mean straight swap for your JP7?.I know the Floyd Silos are on the up price wise but I'd be more concerned with realisingng the true value of your Pet if that was the case.still its your guitar and your deal.

At one time EBMM did recessed neck joints, it cost a bit more than what they do now.

Sorry guys, I guess I wasn't clear enough.

It's not the backplate that worries me but the fact that this looks like an older model (pre EB era...). I was wondering if these old models hold the same quality standards that the newest EBMM's are known for. I noticed for example that the neck and fretboard show absolutely no birdseyeing whatsoever (first MM I see without this feature). At the same time, maybe these models are somehow rarer and therefore more valuable than the new ones. I'm just throwing these ideas out as they come, I'm actually pretty clueless about the whole thing and that's why I came here to ask!

There probably would be some cash involved in the trade as JP's DO go for a bit more than Silhos around here in Italy but I'm more concerned with getting the right guitar for me ATM. I'll let you know how it goes.

This is an Ernie Ball guitar made in the USA plant like the rest of 'em.Quality will be no more or less than all the others.Somebody who knows more than me will give you a better idea but my guess is this one is from the mid 90s give or take a year or two?
birdseye is luck of the draw zEr0...two of mine have loads and two have very little....look through the picture gallery and you'll see loads of maple board Silos with realtively plain necks.same for the basses.most of the figured stuff goes on signature guitars and then it's pot luck for the rest I believe
btw it looks stunning in all white with maple...very classy.

There were no Silhouettes prior to the EB Era. The Silhouette was Sterling and Dudley's first guitar design after they took over.

I believe the floyd option silos were available late 80's into early/mid 90's. I don't recall the exact time frame of the recessed neck plate era. If the neck is unfinihed (oil/wax rather than poly coated) it would probaly date in the 90's.

I can't quite read the serial # in the picture, but if you post it in a seperate thread they may be able to give you a date of birth.

From the silos I've seen (which you could count on one hand!)- they all had plain necks with no birdseye.
Sorry I can't comment on the rest of your thread but I expect more people here on the forum to give their 2 cents/pence worth.

I'd love one too, but there's no way I'd trade my JP7 (if I had one) for it. Heck, there's no way I'd my JP6 for it. I'm sure old Silos are great, but I love my EBMM guitars too much to let them go. Plus, I'm not a fan of the Floyd--just my personal preference. Of course, if you have a special need for the Silo for whatever reason, well, okay, fine. However, as someone pointed out before, I think you might be on the losing end of the deal financially. Definitely make sure that you get some cash in the deal. You might look at Ebay to see what both guitars might be worth.
