Question about Sabre pickups, routing Stingrays, etc.

Alright dudes, I have had an Ernie Ball era Stingray for about 3 years, and I've decided that I need something with more low end, and that bridge pickup isn't cutting it in my reggae/ska/rock band ( www.myspace.com/kubensis , in case you were wondering), and I want a bass with a Precision pickup (Mike Dirnt Sig has a nice low end sound), or a humbucker in the neck position. I've been looking into Sabres, but I don't know if it is worth it because I'm thinking that I might be able to just slap another MM pickup into my Stingray. I know that that would require a lot of work, and my question to ya'll is, should I take a chance and buy a Sabre online (I will never find one in SB), or transform my Stingray into a 'Sabre.'?


Yes, I am familiar with Bongos, but I don't have that kind of money and I don't like the painted on neck finish.

I was in the same situation for almost the same reason (ska/reg) and I love the Stingray tone but wanted some more "boom"

I bought a Sabre without playing one and I fit in exactly were I wanted it.

I would say buy one if you can.

Another solution I found later was to make a mod to the 3-band pre-amp in the Ray. The 3-band has a filter (high or low pass, not exaclty sure which its called) that removes some of the extreme lows. i removed this Cap and added a nice amount of extram lows..

I don't mean to hijack this thread - but why do you guys think a SR lacks bottom end?

I don't think they think a SR lacks bottom end so much as they just want more of that big round sound you get from a precision p'up in the neck position. The SR's sound is tight and aggressive, and so not as round and open as a precision sound. I think that's what they mean.

good point. i was thinking along the same lines.
