question about wonderwipes

hey everyone, first post here
i have a JP guitar and i think i'm gonna try one of those wonderwipes fretboard conditionners to clean the neck but my question is, do i need the BC oil & wax also or does the wonderwipes do all the job? i noticed the color of the back of the neck changed a bit since i've got the guitar (about 6 months and the back of the neck looks more yellow now)

First of all, welcome to the EBMM forum, it's an awesome place!!
Second, we have a rule here: if you don't post pictures of your guitar, then it doesn't exist. To post a pic, host it on a site like photobucket and paste the image code in your message.
Third, the fretboard conditioner wipes are designed to nourish the fretboard wood. Although the JP board is rosewood, some EBMM's (like the Axis) have maple boards so I'm guessing the wipes will also help with your neck, I know I use them, but maybe just cuz they smell nice!!

thanks for the quick reply, yeah i guess it's mainly for the fretboard since it's called fretboard but my question was more do i also need the BC oil & wax for the back of the neck if i use the wonderwipes instead?

I would say yes. But oil and waxing the neck is something to do infrequently. I use WWs on my neck every week or so.

Best that I can tell, the WW formula is water based, so it is not a substitute for the BWC oil/wax finish.

I tried the WW on maple (neck backs) for awhile but decided it wasn't for me; too waxy feeling. I'll refinish with the BWC products once a year or so. However, I think WW's work great on rosewood boards, infrequently. Just my own preference.

since i'm searching something specifically for the neck back, i guess i'll go with the BWC products then, i already use kyser lemoin oil for the fretboard and i thought the wonderwipes would be good for the neck back (and replace the BWC oil & wax).
so you use the BWC products only once a year?

I'm sure many like what WW's do for their maple bits, judging by some of the pictures I see posted here since they came out. I can't say whether a steady application will eliminate the need for occasional BWC applications.

I've only refinished my two Silos once with BWC, I guess around 9 months or so ago. They're both holding up well, so no need for another BWC treatment. If/when they look and feel too dry, I'll do it again, not until then.

If I do use WW on the maple portion of the necks, I use it sparingly, and wipe it down immediately. Then, if it feels waxy, I wipe it down again with a very slightly damp cloth, followed by a dry cloth. One of the things I love about MM necks is the natural wood feel, and my intention is to retain that while making sure the wood is adequately sealed.

After I polish the neck it just feels frictionless to me.

I dunno, BP, it just doesn't feel the same as the original finish to me. I used "waxy" for lack of a better word. Actually, it's not as much an issue once I get 4-5 wipes into the container, but the top few were saturated, and that was a little overkill for use on maple. Just my own opinion and preference, though. I like the original feel and finish.

What surprised me about the wonder wipes is how dry they are. They aren't really saturated with cleaner. Works well. Just enoough to get the guitar clean and a streak free shine.

^^ It depends on which one. The fretboard conditioner is loaded, even after you get a couple wipes in. Plenty of goodness to soak in the fretboard (and your hands, so for the rest of the day people can say "Dude, your hands smell like fruit"

Tha thing that amazes me about the Wonder Wipes is that they feel almost 'dry' when you remove one from the canister, but once you start *using* it, the wetness comes to the surface of the wipe. It's really brilliant, and I wonder how it works! (Guess that's why they're "Wonder" Wipes!)

As for replacing the B-C Oil and Wax treatment.. I wouldn't think so. You can probably extend the amount of time between oilings by using the wipes, though.

I suspect this is true.

I still prefer the WW's for my rosewood board, over pure lemon oil, and plan on using them whenever the board dries out. Not before, though, and not just for looks.

Also find myself using the string Wipes regularly after playing. They do seem to extend the useful life of strings, and make the strings feel "crisp" to play.

String and Fretboard are loaded. The Instrument ones aren't as wet. I think its better it helps you not get that streaky smears on the finish.

Quick question: do any of the major guitar chains (GC, Sam Ash) carry the Wonder Wipes? Or am I more likely to find them at a smaller, independent store?

FWIW, I live in the Cincinnati, OH area.
