Derek:

Someone asked me the other day if the preamp design on the Stingray 5 has changed over the years. (Of course he also claims the older SR5s sound better. Does it ever STOP?)

Anyway, any insight? Have the preamps changed?

thanks buddy

I have heard that argument for sometime now, regarding new sr5's and older ones. Some may just flat out equate that higher price equals better sounding. But I've played both and I have to say that the new sr5 electronics seem to have more bite to it. In other words it seems to be really driven as opposed to the more laid back older ones. But that's just what I think because it suits my playing style. Im sure others would disagree. But price isnt always the deciding factor. I'll go to bat any day with my $800 Tobias against some garbage BTB Ibanez.

From 89 to 92 the SR5 's had Alnico magnets in the pickup. Circa 1992 we then switched to the Ceramic magnets and added a dummy coil. We also changed the preamp to accomodate the new pickup design which would allow hum cancellation in all three positions.

Thanks
