Question for JP players: tone knob position?

To all the JP players out there...

... do you get much use out of the tone knob? I tend to find that mine is nearly always at the extreme treble end - about the last 15% of the dial.

I don't know if it's because of the setup I have (JP -> Boss GT-8 processor -> PA) or if it's just a characteristic of the pickups in the JP that they get kinda muddy at the extreme low end.

PLEASE don't treat this as a criticism... especially since I might be the only one who operates his/her guitar that way. I'm just interested to see what other people have found through their experience.

Hi I use my tone control in the extreme(!) treble position almost all of the time and I run it through a Keeley Tubescreamer and then into my dual rectifier


I think most guitar player dont even touch this control

but,

I do alter it quite a bit when Im playing with the functions/covers band,
if the function set is more jazz standards I will use the neck pickup and the tone control almost all the way down(not right down though!!!)


it is a very powerful control on the JP but for the balls to the walls JP sound I say leave it right the way up

I use the older model JP's non- Dsonic

AFAIK, JP also runs his guitar the same way--with tone control wide open.

I remember an interview with JP where he said he leaves his tone knob at 10 and he said "I don't even know why I have a tone control knob"

That sounds about right for me, too. I hesitate putting anything (amps, pedals, etc.) "all the way to eleven", I usually dial it back a little.

From some of the videos I've seen, occasionally JP nudges the tone knob a little... but I haven't watched close enough to see which way he's moving it (more treble, or less treble).

Thanks for chiming in, guys... I was worried I might have been the only one to think that the low end of the tone knob made the sound muddy.

What I have found really useful is a booster circuit like the one that Neal Moser designed for BC Rich. Basically it is just an amplifier that applies a variable amount of boost when you flick a switch. It's very useful for going between chunky rhythm and a lead sound.

I also leave my tone knob open 95% of the time. Occasionally, on more mellow leads, I'll roll it off a bit.

I'm glad it has a tone knob. I never think of having more options as a bad thing... But I own a Mark IV so I'm used to knobs.

eh i disagree on the tone knob, because if it's fully open, it's as if it wasn't there... the moment you turn it down, the capacitor activates and it's actually working harder than if it was fully turned on.

for the most out of your pickups, leave that thing wide open.

of course turn it down a bit to take the top-end off your pickups... but i rarely do that.

I roll the tone knob a bit off for all my guitars just as a rule. Couldn't say why I do this, but it cools down the highs just a tad for warmth or something. Just some bad habit I got into, and my new JP is no different. Love the tone.

I use my tone control knob all the time... this is why I can't have those metal knobs, I have to have those numbers to look at

Yes, it is an active circuit but does not require active pickups.

After reading this post I have been messing around with the tone control

I usually have it all the way round..wide open or almost all the way down(for jazz stuff)

but after messing around with it its actually quite a useful thing to have!!!

I have started to incorporate it into my rhythm sound by backing it off a little then srewing it right up for different parts in song....adding to the dynamic's in songs


have a go its quite good to be able to alter your tone in such a way mid song with the little adjustment at the guitar end

I always have the tone knob on 11, just like the volume knob. To avoid turning the tone knob down in any way, I cut the wires to it, disabling it.
