I've been using EMG's for about 25 years and you have to play the guitar the way that they want you to.The feel is different to pasive pups which is why some folks struggle with them, they are wonderfully touch sensitive, hit the strings hard and they change their sonic character and expression espesialy on partial drive.Turn the drive up to saturation and they just wail like a b*stard with compressed raw plectrum attack. They sound OK at bedroom level but at proper gig level through a good valve amp with little eq and you will be rewarded with not only a great sound but flattering feel too.
I was trying to figure out a good way to put it into words, but Stu pretty much nailed it.
It's funny...I've noticed my technique changes a bit when I'm playing the Luke live. They seem to sound better the harder you hit them when at stage volume, but they still sound clear when you roll the volume down.
Like Stu said...touch sensitive.
