I would love to hear from any ball owners who run the piezo pick-ups direct to the mixing board.

What DI or equivalent have you used and are you happy with the sound? I have been looking at the Tech21 Para DI but would like to get feedback from the MM community.

Thanks

Hey D,

I have two pedal boards (I play with two bands).

On the first board, I use the DI on my Peterson strobe tuner. It's nice and clean and has just the right output level. It is very simple to use. Plug in an go. I control the on/off by the foot switch on the tuner.

On the second board, which is for a cover tunes band and is much more elaborate (16 pedals) to get authentic tones for many varied styles/bands, I have added a Baggs Para Acoustic DI. It works great and allows me do some frequency and gain/level tweaking when necessary. It's also good if you have a bunch of acoustics (I do) with different attitudes. It requires access to the board or coordination with the sound tech to avoid errant noises when switching guitars etc.

What sort of work are you planning to do with it? That makes a difference in what I would recommend.

Edit: OK, I noticed the link in your signature and checked out your bands website. Very nice playing! The three tunes you have up there are all electric guitar based. What sort of acoustic stuff are you doing or planning to do?

Thanks quitfiddle,

We play some Floyd & Zep tunes (eg. Over the hills) and others that would benefit from the acoustic illusion of piezo or the layered sound of the piezo magnetic combo.

I have tried a simple passive DI but find the piezo tone to be cold and thin.

Well that would be the mix on the board making it sound that way for sure...The reason for the PA is all the frequencies are represented when the piezo signal gets there, unlike a regular Elec. guitar amp with limited frequency response.....your guy at the board should be able to make your signal as thick or thin as he or you wants it plus add some verb to thicken it up if need be...and then run it(the wet Signal) back to you via your monitor....all through a DI box...NOW like Guitfiddle says when using more than 1 acoustic or types of acoustic tones ..the LR Baggs gives him more control over ALL of them...but for me i dont bring a real Acoustic just the AL and the LUKE w/piezo ... so its just the DI....Hope that helps
