I have an HSS Axis sport and the humbucker in it just blows me away. LOVE the sound of it. DOes anyone know what model EB put in these? Or the next closest equivalent? Thanks.

I have been playing the stock humbuckers in my ASS for 3 years now.......they are not bad and are actually pretty good, but after 3 years of playing them, they are actually pretty sterile and neutral, and I am swapping them out for a SH-4 JB in the bridge and a SH1 59 in the neck. It's a pretty common pickup configuration, had this same setup in an old Ibanez RGA I used to have, sounded really good. The ASS stock pups aren't bad, I just need some character, and that is what they missing.

I have loved the JB/59 combo in every guitar I have played with them. While I personally think the stock Dimarzio Custom Neck pickup is perfect in the Sport/Super Sport guitar, I would be real interested to hear your review of the JB after you put it in.

Please report back when you can. Sound clips would be fantastic if you have the capabilities!

Yes, the stock pups are Dimarzio customs.......they are very good pups, and it looks like I won't have a problem selling them if the new ones work out tonally. =) As far as tone goes,...I have really adjusted my vision and ears from hard rock and metal to a much more mature sound. Both the pups are really very good in their own right, the neck pup is really nice as well, I would just like the ability to get a little more 'blues' out of it when in the 1 or 5 position, whichever you call it.

They have plenty of character, you just don't happen to dig that particular vibe. I'm glad you found what you like though.

Yes sir, you are correct....they do have plenty of character, I guess I am just looking for a different vibe/sound.

Hah! But yes, that does illustrate a great point. Pickups are but one part of the signal chain. We've all heard guys that can play country to funk to jazz to metal on an Axis.

The neck pickup has grown on me more and more over the years. The bridge is the best pickup on the planet.....at least to me. :)

Granted, the super sports have less bite than my hardtail, so I have a slight advantage. Take out that silly tone knob and extra wiring to really open the rock 'n' roll floodgates. :D.

The custom dimarzios are the bomb. For those who aren't into them, might I suggest a new amp? LOL

+ 1 in regards to "a new amp" and Beej's comment on the signal chain. I just scrapped my Boss GT10 for Hardwire pedals through a Marshall JVM head. The GT10 was a tone sucker after a year of messing around with it. All postitions on the Axis SS w/ the Dimarzios via my new set up are amazing.
