Question of the Week for BP: Colors and Finishes

BP,

This week, I'm wondering about the life and death of certain colors and how they sometimes meet an untimely (or timely, perhaps) end.

First, how are colors chosen? Is it a committee, a meeting, you and Dudley eating tri-tips, Dargin wakes up in the middle of the night shouting, "Eureka!"?

How often do you think the palette should change? I know certain standard finishes (black, sunburst, some kind of red) are always going to be with us, of course.

And then some, like Copperhead Bronze, seem to some of us like really great finishes but they never really make it off the starting line. Is it all about the dealers' reactions at NAMM and what they order?

I think BP gets a "sneak peak" at the new Harley Davidson colors (I'm sure he knows personally both Harley & Davidson!), and then takes it from there.

Motorcycles and guitars go hand n' hand, if we like it on a bike then more than likely we'll like it on a guitar.

Either that or I think BP may have "visions" in the night.

Whatever the means, they are always "dynamite" colors!!

the funny thing about jacks questions is that he answers each one...

but obviously sales drive colors...just in fashion there are colors that are hot and colors that are cold. A good example of that was trans orange a few years ago...Hot as can be. Cooled off.

When we decide to change colors the strong sellers are bulletbroof but the weaker ones dont survive.

Dudley and the lads collect pain and samples all year long. WE also hire color consultants. When we did the Bongo we hired the girl who did all of the Rolls ROYCE PHANTOMS...Rolls burgandy came from the rolls chart.

This year a very hot designer happens to do Nissan's work and we retained her and one of her colors was that bright blue that was at he open house.

I dont pick colors initially anymore. I gave up after the sparkle fiasco...we died with those. I Pick once they have narrowed it down.

The color has o look good on all models too

Bass colors and Car colors...!

I play Car BONGO with my son, he's 4...The game is to find cars in the same color Bongos come in...

He know's Desert Gold and Pearl Lava...there's a Chevy HH on our street in Desert gold and one of those really boxy looking cars in Pearl Lava....Buttercream is sitting on a PT Cruiser around the block, which reminds me about NOT having a Buttercreme bongo...

This drives my wife nuts...Bongo this Bongo that, now my boy talks about it.

I'd like to see some colours like this:

Interference colors. Coated mica pigments which reflect different wavelengths based on angle. BASF pigments division makes them as do a couple other companies. BASF had Gibson produce a couple Les Pauls with their pigments. There was the Honda two-seater a few years back in the Honda R&D lobby painted with them.

BASF made a plastics grade for use in coloring plastics. We made display kits which were put in front of many customers. Everybody thought they were cool, particularly the blue-to-green flop version. At the end of the day, however, no one bought any. Cool doesn't mean sellable. The pigments were of course very expensive. BASF ended up discontinuing them at least for plastics.

Now back to your regularly scheduled program.

can i have a matching stingray to go along with my maroon (well maroon in daytime, brown at night, purple in the rain, yellow in spring time) porsche 944?

what about colours in the past that have been discontinued like TRANS BLUE...if possibility of sales figures in range on this colour and popularity for example look good, would they ever be considered to be put back in the pallet? I wanted my new SR4 fretless to be trans blue but since the dealer said it was discontinued, we went with Pacific blue burst which i'm sure will be gourgious when it comes in

How about a series of exotic natural finishes. I would order a Sterling HS & Sterling 5 HS in seconds if they was offered in Spalted Maple or Buck Eye Burl. No Pickguard.

I'd like to see some colours like this:

Awhile ago I was looking around all Guitar Centers stores for a Stingray 5, and they had one that was refinished in that color, where it changed depending on what angle. I considered it, but my girlfriend said NO WAY so I had to pass. It was real cheap too, like $800 or something.
