Ive owned this bass since 2005 and have only just wondered whether the active treble and bass are both boost and cut. So when they are in the center position they are flattened off or is it just boost?

center detent is flat. Turn clockwise for boost and ccw for cut.

Thankyou, there isn't a center detent on these, that's why I wondered if it was just boost, so its similar to the classic stingray then.

Was thinking of putting a coil split on mine or even a switch to cut the active circuit out, just a few mods to add a few different sounds. I managed to get a stingray 5 pickup off someone on the forum so its got the four wires on it to enable a split.

I also have a SUB5, and wiring it's pups to series made a huge difference... IIRC, the bass and treble controls are boost/cut, without a center detent...

You do specify "afaik" so please consider your
knowledge bank to now be updated:

It's not a high resolution image, but if you keep
clicking on it til it overflows your screen you can
clearly see the textured finish and also see that
it has four control knobs.

From 2003-2006 there was a SUB 4 (Sting Ray 4) and SUB 5 (Sting Ray 5 string). Both had the normal active Sting Ray 2EQ. As an option both could also be ordered with passive electronics.

From 2004-2006 there was a SUB Sterling (Sterling Bass) with 3EQ but no passive option.

All were made in San Luis Obispo USA.

Edit: These are different to the more recent SUB Sterlings (Ray 4 and Ray 5).

"... and not a SUB... "

A SUB Sterling, yes. Not a SUB ??? Howzat go ?

Well, the SUB Sterling is a bit unique - it has a typical Sterling neck profile and body(slab, though), yet a 6 bolt neck(Sterlings usually have a 5 bolt neck) - and has the 3 band peamp with the center detents... Mine also has the compensated nut... If you look at the headstocks in my picture, they're a SUB5, SUB Sterling Bass, and SUB Bass, left to right...

In short, it's a different animal than what is typically thought of as a SUB - so, technically, it really isn't just a "SUB with a 3 band preamp"... I think the SUB Sterlings were the fewest made of the SUB series of basses, followed by the SUB5s - the regular SUBs were much more common...

Amazing instruments and id love one of each like you have georgestrings. Im gonna post some recordings up in a moment, made using a SUB5 and my recently acquired SUB1. Interestingly my SUB1 was modified by a tech in the shop I get my guitars from. He took the electronics and pickguard from a new sterling and installed it on the SUB, it sounds amazing considering the electronics are meant to be cheaper than what was originally on it.

Well, this just goes to show you learn something new every day. Thanks Rod! Although I'm a bit perplexed by georgestrings comments. My SUB 5 is 3EQ (active), with no center detents.

Not sure how that fits in, or if it really even matters, she's a great bass and will always be my 5 string if I ever decide I want to play a 5 string. I keep waiting for a 3 string to come out. I'd buy that in a New York minute. :)

I actually got the SUB5 first, looking for a cost effective backup for a SR5 HH I had at the time - the SR5 HH has since been replaced with a Sterling 5 HS, but the SUB5 remains... After that, I started the hunt for a SUB Sterling in great condition, and found mine - then, it was only a matter of time before I rounded them out with the black SUB bass... I've actually played guitar far longer than I have bass - and could see a SUB guitar in my future - just to flesh out my SUB collection, lol...

The SUB5 has been a real workhorse, and has seen quite a few gigs - it was definitely a great purchase... I hope your SUBs work out as well for you as mine have for me...

I like those Pickguards in industry-aluminum-look.

I didn't care for those PGs at first, but they've actually gotten alot of compliments - and have grown on me... Even though it's not in the pic, I bought the alum diamond plate PG for my SUB Sterling, too - I was surprised when EBMM told me they were still available, and less than $25 - I couldn't resist grabbing one...

To my knowledge, the SUB5 basses were only available with the classic 2 band preamp or passive - it wouldn't be the 1st time someone swapped out a preamp...

Doh - my mistake georgestrings. She's a 2 band active with compensated nut. I had to go look (had to find her first). I think I'll play her tonight. :)

thanks for making me look......tbone
