question on flatwounds and tension

i bought a set of flatwounds for my stingray a while back, they're 45s-100s, this shouldnt make them sound different from the 105s that are reccomended for the stingray. that is the tension will not have any effect on the sound right? that is these should sound exactly like the 105s right?

They will sound different because they are flats. Also keep in mind there is variances in tension for the same gauge too... Ie EB chromes are a higher tension than TI flats, and La Bellas are probably higher tension than Chromes.

Typically a lighter gauge string will be more flexible, possibly less "punchy" and possibly less "beefy"... But those are wide generalizations.

Between a like set of 100s and 105s there may be a small difference... But between round and flat a much more noticeable difference.

so i shouldnt purchase the 105s cause they'd be no different than my 100s?

Are they the same exact type? If yes they will probably be a bit punchier and a bit beefier. By how much, I don't know. It may be worth it if you need a new set... but the value call is up to you. It may be worth a try but again that's your call, if you get a good deal you'll have a spare set even if they aren't THAT different.

We are always seeking perfect tone and strings do play a big part IMAO.

yeah were talking the same flatwounds here. ive been considering the 105s over the 100s if they are a little warmer sounding. but if i can get wicked warm sound out of these 100s ill probobly stick with them

You just need to try them both and see which YOU like better.

I have been using the EB Group III Flats on my SR4 and been loving it. The tension has a "tighter" feel than with the Super Slinkys that are the same gauge (45-100). I just ordered a set of EB Group IV Flats to see if the smaller gauge (40-95) will have a "looser" feel. I got the email that they shipped today so I will try them out and post my take on them. But remember, each of us had a different tolerance and tactile response, so one size does not fit all, this is why EB sells individual strings.
