I have a JP50 with a tremol-no

We sometimes have songs which is in DROP D,
so we practiced some of our songs in drop D everything seems to be fine.

when we are going to switch the tuning,
i looked at my spring cavity and saw that the tremolo wasnt locked!

so I asked myself how come I was playing the song right?
i switched the tuner on, and saw minor adjustments of the tuning of strings A to high E.. the tuning was slightly tuned up.

if you would hear it out, its very minor,
i asked my bandmates if I wasnt in tune, they said that Im fine.

I use .10 string gauge slinkys

questions:
- what if I use a thicker bottom strings, will my guitar be "in tune" if I drop D my guitar without the tremol-no?

- I kept on searching some devices that can make me switch to drop D without setting up the guitar which can also make me do whammy stuff on it,
the tremol-no is only limited to divebombs only.. does string gauges help in a way?..

thanks,
rafael

If the trem is floating, it's always going to go out of tune when you change the tension on any of the strings.

If you block it it's down-only (either with something in the cavity, tremol-no, etc.) then you'll be able to detune w/o any tuning issue.

yes thats the thing really,
however in this situation I now always check my tuner and the tuning was changed a bit, so curiousity comes into mind.

i love the tremol-no, however im still looking for another device that can make me do the "Drop D" tuning, with the trem still in "floating" of course without the need of a set-up...

i Just thought strings can help a bit :D

My son has a Petrucci...and uses drop C tuning. The strings he uses are Skinny top and Heavy bottom. The guitar is set up for this tuning and nothing else. Switching tunings or string guages will through off the floting bridge, truss rod etc etc.

I think if you want full use of your tremolo, then you have no option but to keep the guitar in one type of tuning with one type of string guage.

Otherwise, continue to use the tremel-no, buy a second John Petrucci set up to a different tuning, or buy a guitar without a floating bridge.
