Head on over to the Guitar Center in Cerritos (across 183rd street from the mall). You can experience the difference. Ask for Alex.

stingray = fat tone, incredibly punchy, classic tone, slap monster, heavy

sterling = slimmer jazz style neck, tone similar to a SR5, smaller body, back loaded electronics, awesome tone

Bongo = tone that will cream your jeans, longer neck, unique style body,

Stingray = the quintessential musicman, huge punchy sound from the humbucker

Sterling = thinner more 'jazz' style neck, back loaded electronics so no control plate, extra coil switching and I think better eq (on the SUB's at least, I don't know the full options for the full models) and a slightly different pickup to the stingray

SUB's = a more affordable version of the Stringray, Sterling and Stingray 5, matte finish, rosewood neck only and a satin neck, now discontinued due to economics (they were made as an affordable 'Made in USA' bass, and economics have since meant they would either cost a lot more to make, or have to be outsourced, which loses the origonal point in them, hence discontinued sadly)

Bongo's = I will admit I don't know too much about Bongo's being relatively new to Musicman, but a much more radical body shape, jazz neck iirc, and better control over the eq

If I have anything slghtly wrong here, please correct me, still fairly new to this stuff

The Bongo neck isn't Jazz-ish. The Sterling neck is. The Bongo neck is wider. Bongo bodies are made of basswood, not for economy but because that's what wound up offering the best mix of tone and weight. The basswood body is why there are no trans finishes on standard Bongos (one-offs made of other woods have been built...mahogany and ash...but these are not available to the public).

Bongos have unique 18-volt electronics designed by the esteemed Mr. Gimpel with input from a number of EBMM-associated artists. The electronics are rear-mounted and not attached to the top of the bass at all (which I think is also unique). There's a 4-band EQ on most models...the H ones have a 3-band. Incredible versatility and monster tone...that's "monster" as in if Godzilla played bass, he'd play a Bongo.

The ergonomics of the Bongo are very good. This was not something I'd thought about until I picked one up. The body tapers down to a rather thin, rounded edge that gives you a nice place to rest your arm no matter where you're plucking, and there's a belly cut in the back. It's easily the most comfortable bass I've ever played.

Bongos also emit powerful mind-control rays that, once you're exposed, cause you to NEED a Bongo the way Cartman needs more Cheesy Poofs. Just look at poor Jack. He was an early victim. Some other forumites are well on their way. MingusBASS is showing signs of serious Bongoholism, with three of them squirreled away. And Chuck "Psycho" Ward...well, let's not go there. He's got issues. :p

I confess that later this year I'll own a second one. But I can handle it. I don't have a Bongo problem. Nope. No sireeee...not me. I can quit any time I want......

Oh, and some people think it looks like a toilet seat. So do I. I think it's way cool.

I liked that reply a while back to a similar question, where someone posted these pictures the last one being Godzilla. That cracked me up.

The Bongo I bought there was set up horribly. The strings were actually fretting out on the pickups. After a set-up it was cool.

I am, uh, 40ish...

Alex has always been really cool to me and always remembers my name when I come in. Tell him Rex sent you. I spend a s-load of money there.

The main difference in all is that you will find one that is you. Then you hang out here and find they are all for you. :)
