Questions before ordering a new Sterling

You may be right, but I think that's only on the single pickup SR5 and Sterling. If you call them tomorrow maybe you can find out for sure, but you will most likely need to speak with an engineer, not just a customer service rep. as they probably won't know either.

Don't be selling us CS reps short! We are smarter than we look ... and that is such a good thing!

The Bongo pickups are all wired in parallel. I think the consensus is that if they were wired in series, we would have to start using the Richter scale as part of the way we measure the specifications.

Interesting....does that mean that the 2pup Sterlings/SR5s actually have more output than the 2pup SR4s?

Not necessarily. Remember that the electronics are different in the instruments, both in the preamp and the pickups.

For one thing, the StingRays in all pickup configurations are equipped with alnico magnets, which generally have a higher output than the ferrite ones we use in the Sterling and StingRay 5. Likewise, the preamps are designed differently for the instruments to accomodate the properties of each. It isn't the pickups that are active anyway, it is the preamp where the true sound is processed.

So the devil is in the details - we can't just take one spec and assume that one bass has this, or that, but instead look at the overall characteristics of each instrument.

That probably makes it clear as mud!

Just a side note for all prospective Sterling buyers, after some extensive testing today, I think that the best combinations are an HH with a Maple board and an HS with a Rosewood board. To my ears those combinations sound the best by far.

But as always you may have a difference of opinion and like it the other way around.

i have the opposite combos - but i really pick my fingerboards based on what looks better.

either way - we all like different things and choose based on different criteria.

Where'd you go to try em out? wacha get? when u getting your Sterling? that's whats important

personally, im afraid of matching headstocks... so id skip that option and put the money from the price difference into a huge stockpile of slinkys & wonderwipes

I actually prefer a red, but I like one that's transparent. I really like the Cherry Sunburst. I am not trying to be a copycat, but BP's new bass may have the exact specs that I want to order now.

If it was me....... I'd call Pete Dubaldo ( or Nick Dubaldo, you never know which one your gonna get!, and they sound the same....... ) and order a Blue Dawn Sterling HS...... but that's just what I would do....


PS - The back of the headstock on Sterlings look to be glossier and have more shine than the back of my Stingray headstock......Any reason why?
