I have had my sterling AX-40 for over a week now and i am really impressed with it even stock it was outstanding(maybe i got a super sweet one?) anyway so far i have changed out the stock buckers to a dimarzio tone zone and a air norton(the original recommened replacement set for a axis.
What i want to ask is how much of a tone/performance difference will there be IF i swap out the stock trem for a real good floyd trem like the gotoh or schaller?
Will the AX-40 sound better/different?
and where can i get that plate that attaches to the bottom of the trems baseplate that sit flush with the body when the trem is stationary?

Your tone would improve if you replaced the stock trem with an upgrade, but I would refer you to this thread:

http://forums.ernieball.com/music-man-guitars/44832-questions-about-ax-40-a-2.html
thanks for that read but you are aware i already have both the ax40 and the schaller?
I am not trying to make the ax40 a instant axis clone cause i realize there are several key things that can never be duplicated but i did want my ax40 to perform the best it possibly can and IMHO the trem and pu upgrade is great start.
I know NOTHING about the sterlings stock floyd but i am just guessing that there is no way in hell it can be as high quality as the schallers made in germany?
What i really needed to know is IF there will be a noticable tone change? I ask this because with the p'u upgrade i already did the AX is sounding phenominal and i was hoping it would only get better with a floyd swap?

Sorry about any confusion. The trem could make a huge difference in your tone. Just to give you an idea of how dramatic the difference could be, I've attached a video. If you skip between :24 and 1:21, you can get a good A/B comparison on clean.

The particular guitar he was using was equipped with a stock OFR. He added a Brass Big Block. Basically, he started with pretty good components already, and got a dramatic improvement. Going from the stock trem on the AX40 to a standard Schaller would improve the tone, but going to a Schaller with a Brass Block would make it even more dramatic.
