i watched it 5 times and i couldn't help but notice how into it Travis and Vai were...

I think Vai's the kind of guy where to him he doesn't have to show off... people know who he is and what he is capable of...

i thought it was a great showing... and that Baby Blue Al... holy moly BP!!! That bass is by far my favorite...

I just watched it...

It was awful if I am brutally honest.

Steve Vai looked well out of his comfort zone.
Horrible "acoustic" tone and guitar tone. Woulda been better if he used his signature acoustic only.

Randy Jackson and his custom made for this tv appearance Big AL bass was nice though.

Orianthi... am I the only one who is tired of her getting shoved down our throats? She is mediocre at best.
Just because she is a girl I don't believe she should be getting all this praise, in a world where women seek equal rights they dont seem to get it in the guitar world.

The whole performance was missing fire and moreso when it comes after the guitar solo.
The vocals are very important at that section and thats where the fire has to be and it simply wasnt.

I don't think anyone can really replicate the Zeppelin vibe except for Zeppelin themselves. That being said, I think the performance wasn't all that bad. I personally like Vai, Travis Barker, and Orianthi's playing. Randy playing the Big AL 5 was pretty cool. I listened to Orianthi's solo album the other day and was really blown away. I think its a great album.

A great song is usually the sum of it's parts.
Well I like the parts individually. Just not together. The song really lacked presence.

Many artist have attempted to cover this song over the years, but I have yet to hear a version that does the original justice.

Not denying her talent, but I don't get all the Mary J Blige hype. I find her to be highly over rated!

I think Vai was excellent! Tone and playing.

Orianthi, well sure she's a young pretty face. But she does have chops! I'm more curious to see what she'll be doing 10 years from now.

I can't really judge Randy's playing, but I could feel the Big AL cutting through!
That why I posted the vid in the first place.

I was actually pleasantly suprised at how well the song went. When I heard Mary J. was singing it, I thought it was going to take a turn to unrecognizable. They stayed pretty true to the original. I thought the fact that Vai let Orianthi take the solo was pretty classy of him. He's got nothing to prove to anyone. She may not be a virtuoso in par with Vai, but I'm pretty impressed with her playing.

There are just some songs that are never going to be as good as the original, no matter how well they are performed. Either the songs were perfectly executed originally, or they are so cemented into our collective consciousness, that anything different sounds wrong. "Stairway To Heaven", "Bohemian Rhapsody", "Free Bird", "Baba O'Reilly", and "Unchained" all come to mind.

I think that it was a great job, for such an unlikely collection of artists that were put together.

I would have posted this comment even if BP hadn't posted earlier.

I liked the version - I love the song and have done ever since I saw Zep first perform it live.

Nice vocal phrasing - I don't want to hear someone "cloning" Bob The Weeds superb vocal rendition. Loved the drummer who reminded me in a small way of Keith Moon. Most drummers play around a kit. Moon used to progress forward over his kit Ha! (Rip Moonie and I wonder what would have happened if Moon had joined Zep?).

Vai did a stand up job - theses guys are playing in front of millions of people. If I had to that and play Stairway to Heaven - I'd have froze.

My computer speakers are cr4p so I can't comment on the bass in the mix - but it sure looked good.

I must get a life - cos I've never seen that blonde guitar player - she can come and play rhythm in my band anytime - nah good luck to her. Accept the breaks that the Music Industry gives ya and milk it as much as ya can - hell I'd like to be her manager ha! (for the 20% !!!!)

Oh yes you have!!!
If you saw any footage when Michael Jackson died, you saw her at least a 1000 times!

She's also in the "This Is It" movie/DVD

She's from Australia

It's surely a nice looking instrument..........and Mr Ball's beautiful phrase "sack of old tarts" will be finding a place in my extensive vocabulary of abuse.
Let's be honest boys, if we were all to receive criticism for dodgy cover versions.....er....we'd all be receiving lots of criticism.

.....because, as we all know, our American cousins have such an encyclopaedic knowledge of the wider world. "Wales??? Isn't that part of Poland?"

OK that's you beaten to death by Australians & me by the Americans!!

Anyway, back on topic....I now know what American Idol is ( run away) and that Randy Jackson isn't one of the Jackson 5.....and that's STILL a pretty guitar

I love playing a bit of bass .. and a bit of drums (and I mean "a bit")

To be fair to our bass friends, I was doing bass gigs for about a decade before I did guitar gigs.
PS why is this thread over here anyway? Surely it should be on the bass side (in bigger print with shorter words)
