You guys are cluttering up my bid on a white 5er dang it. :)

When you get to the gig with your Bongo 5 and they want you to play something else you probably won't get back to the parking lot before they change their minds about needing a bass player :)

Welcome back to your manhood Jason.

Darn it, Jack! I was going to link to that photo of you playing a Les Paul in the 1980s... :D But your TL post killed that idea.

Oh my...

What if one is... um... bi-stringal? And just can't fly four or five exclusively? Then what??? Hmmm?

O LEt me tell you my real feelings regarding 5 strings. I think that they are really good and can be fabulous. My problem comes when the player falls in love with the low b and uses it like a guitar player used a flanger in the 70's. I thnk that when a balanced approach to the 5 string is used it is really effective. I cant tell you how many bars/clubs I have left because of the five stringer homesteading on the low b...I might as well make him or her a one string

For the first time in many years, I played an entire 4 hour gig with a 4 string bass.

As a direct result, my manliness quotient increased dramatically. Within hours, I had sprouted hair where there had been none before. I also fixed a car in the parking lot of the gig, and got lost on the way home since I refused to ask for directions. My silk Nautica shirt transformed into flannel without me noticing, and I wanted nothing but steak and eggs for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Luckily, I saw a cow on the way home--being a manly man, I now have steak for weeks, and a nice new leather jacket, to boot.

So how did you like the single H Bongo? Did you miss the extra (I didn't say superfluous, that would be argumentative) string(s)?

BP you shouldn't have made the Bongo B string sound so danged good. :)

You are absolutely correct in what the B string can do. It can totally take over the bottom. No need for kick drum or anything below the top 3 strings on a guitar.

I likey my E played on the B string though. :D

Just did a gig with a guy that hated the bongo's looks and 5 strings but he kept telling me to walk it on down to the Bb and then grin his butt off.

Old cabs don't care much for B strings either :)

imho

Heh...one small problem, TK. I didn't say "Real men play four strings exclusively." :D

I still love my 5 strings. In fact, I am chomping at the bit for my 5 string single H Bongo. I agree with BP that some people tend to overuse the low B. Now, I am a big proponent of the low B string, but I tend to stay above the 3rd fret, and usually above the 5th fret on the B.
