Recessed Neck Plate

I just purchased a new Sterling and noticed that the Neck plate was no longer recessed. What year did they stop doing this?

Yeah, it was c.2000

They recently stopped recessing the control plates too. Makes a lot of sense to me, it's a pain to buff the paint on those stepped areas.
