I played my JP through a Mesa half-stack today; it consisted of a Single Rectifier head and the Rectifier 4X10 cabinet and it sounded absolutely killer.

B-52 also makes a very affordable all-tube head that you could pair with one of their cabinets as a more affordable option.

Third thing that comes to mind is a Carvin Vai Legacy half-stack, which comes out to a round thousand.

Sounds like a job for Marshall?....
JCM800 (but an early used one and save a couple bucks)
I hear the Plexi reissue is good (better budget for a power soak;) )
I've heard a couple really nice Soldano's too (a little smooth)

I have a JCM800 50W combo w/ a Weber Silver Bell (ca 1983) that I did a few small (reversible) mods to-It is now my favourite amp-very expressive via guitar volume and LOTS of dynamic headroom. and LOUD.
Ya, it's a one trick pony but what a horse show!:D

yeah definately great stuff. Although this particular amp shares the same EQ for both distortion channels which kinda sucks, but Larry is looking for that ACDC sound so he won't be using that third hi-gain channel.

Another option is Mesa Rect-O-Verb 50 head, heard and read many great things about them

I can't say more about my JSX/Mesa Recto cab combination. I'm sending back my 2nd Carvin V3. Just can't get the fizz out. Not enough warmth. I'm going to try a Legacy now.

The XXX is a great amp, I almost bought one myself. Though, it is based more on the 'Reco' sound, IMO, than a Marshall, which is where'd you be looking to go. In the Peavey range, you might want to look at the JSX. It's a very versatile amp, and could do the sounds you're looking for. The 5150's (6505) Rhythm channel would also be suitable for those sounds.

Outside the Peavey range, you'll get lots of opinions here I'm sure. Though, they're likely going to be much more expensive.

100 W is only 4 dB louder than 50 W, I think 50 W is enough for any venue and situtation

Larry -

50W is way more than enough!

For what you want to play, I would suggest cheking out an Orange Rockerverb 50 -that's what I have and it covers a ton of ground musically - all that you want and maybe even more. Either that or an AD30 if you need less gain variation. But I would really suggest you check them out before you buy. An Axis through the RV is just heaven!

Here - take a listen:

Johnson JM250 with a Marshal 4x12 Celestion V30's is my first recommendation.

Second would be a Mesa TriAxis Pre with a matching tube power amp.

I like the versatility of multiple tones a the stomp of a switch instead of just the two or three that a "regular" head offers.

My $0.02
