Can anyone advise me as to what I would need to record at home onto a Windows based laptop? Software and gear etc? Can I add guitar audio to smapled media etc or what?

My buddy has a laptop so he got the Creative Soundblaster Extigy. It's an external "soundblaster" card. Plugs into the USB. It even comes with recording software and a mixer so you can put your guitar on top of recorded music. Not a pro multitrack setup, but it works just fine.

Does anyone use the Pod XT? What software is there available to run on Windows based PCs? I think the XT comes with its on software? Does anyone still use Cubase VST? Is there an updated version? Whats the advantage of being able to combine audio and MIDI tracks?

Thanks for that Gary! I have a Korg Pandora PX-4 which is essentially an Amp Modelling/Effects Processor - now why can't I use that for recording - it has no USB or digital outputs - just stereo jack plugs to connect to guitar and amp? Can I mod this in anyway to use it like a Pod or am I confusing the two? I really have never done this before so I don't know how to do it?

Steve,
I'm just getting to the point where I'm now able to record the guitar to my computer.

I've been playing for less than 2 years so I've got a ways to go before I'll feel I have something share. I'm so damn self-conscious about my playing right now it isn't funny.

I've been so obsessed with working on technique and everything else that I haven't spent any time trying anything original. Not that I think I will come up with anything original that anyone would want to listen to though.

Right now it's just something that I've always wanted to do and I'm having a blast doing it. On some of the world's best guitars to boot... ;)

Once/if I do have anything, I'll share.

thanks,
fred

Just spent the past 2 hours on the first half dozen lessons on Tweekheadz.

Thanks! Very informative but still very confused.

I still don't know what I need to get? MIDI, Sequencers, mixers, interfaces etc?

AAaaahhhhhhh.........Can I use my Korg Pandora PX-4 amp modelling effects sprocessor or not? Is that a sequencer or interface? IS that or the Pod XT or the Line 6 Guitar Port just for recording audio Guitars? Help.....

Okay MIDI (musical instrument digital interface) is just a standard protocol that enables everyone with midi to have their equipment comunicate with other equipment.
A sequencer can be in hardware or software form and basically enables you create backing tracks of music.
A mixer hardware of software enables you to mix all the different tracks/channels of your sequenced music.
An interface is just that (audio, midi, etc) it enables you to connect your computer to whatever it is you want to put on it.
Very brief explaination of something that can be a very complex thing.

Ok. Thanks. I think that explained it easier than 2 hours on that website. So what do I need to connect my guitar to a computer to lay down some tracks over basic drum, bass patterns. I have a Korg PX-4 -I assume I can connect the guitar through that into the computer somehow as that Korg is an amp simulator and also does rythems, backing tracks and effects etc kinda like the Pod XT. It has a stereo headphone jack and line in, line out?

This is where giving advice can get messy, as I don't know your budget, future goals with recording, level of recording knowledge, type of computer etc. But I'll say recording is something that at any level can improve your playing. Try http://www.m-audio.com/ this company is owned by the company that owns ProTools and can be used with a variety of other software.
