A good friend and former drummer in one of my bands asked me to contribute a bassline for one of the tracks for his solo cd to come out in early 2011.
My session was yesterday, I got a pre production of the song via Email on Sunday. It is was a very slow and dark hardrock number in the likes of early black sabbath.
I brought the bfr Stingray 5 and some other bass which does not matter because it did not get out of the gigbag.
The Stingray was recorded through an old Dynacord tube amp from the 60ies, pushed into saturation and a double miced 4x10 cab. We had three takes, one with position 1 on the selector switch, one with position 4 and another one in position 2. We wanted an authentic big rocktone with some dirt and got that pretty well out of the bass.
The sound guy complimented the sound of the bass as one of the best he ever recorded, especially for the strong and clear sound of the b-string.
When we were almost through and just had to do the a drumbreak at the end of the song, I had the idea of using a big muff to add some more dirt with position 4. Holy sh*t, it sounded awesome.
After that we did one more take of the whole song with the muff that went without editing. Everyone was happy. I will put up a link to the song when it is ready.
The rosewood Stingrays are killer basses! I am very happy to have one!
