Bought my 5 string HH new at a steal of a price. Only problem is I'm no great fan of the desert gold. I'm considering a custom design for myself or possibly a plain Olympic White.

Should I try my first effort at this myself?
Should I pay to have it done?
Anyone want to straigt up trade for a different color? ;)

what is everyone's experience with this?

If you're going to do this, and it's your first effort...pay someone else.

if u have to ask that question.....it's a clear indication u don't know how difficult it would be for u to even come close to achieving the quality of that ebmm paint job.

ebmm quality paint job probably run ya 300-500 bucks......& alot of down time...and alot of searching for someone w/ the ability to do such high quality work.

Adkinson is learning the piano and would rather be home practicing.

My all time favorite line from that movie:

Hmmm? Oh. Complete mystery to me. Woke up just now, one sock to many. :)

Dear Doop,

My Bongo is the same color, so I can't offer you a swap. But I can offer you some fellowship, we brothers of The Order of the Orange Bongo.

I don't have any problem with orange. My Bongo is now the 2nd bright orange bass in my herd. Mine was a steal as well [$921, new, hung for 2yrs unsold]. Come to think of it, my other blazing orange bass has a similar clearance price history. I'll assume you don't play in a goth band, b/c then all you need is some sandpaper and matte black spray paint, so I'm equally assuming that orange isn't a problem for your bandmates or audience. My audience [those that speak to me] ask "where's the orange Bongo" if I play something else that night.

Much as Orange Bongos seem to be orphans in the mass market world, in this forum and at the DudePit, they are the Bette Midlers of the realm: attention grabbing color and shape, and Really Loud! Read some backdated threads for yourself. BTW, maybe a different pickguard would ease things for you? Red torty or black moonstone/pearl really do the orange well.

If you got it from GC then it probably has a White Ice pickguard.

A much less drastic, much less expensive way to change the look of the bass is to just swap the pickguard...a dark guard looks a lot better on DG IMHO.

Here's mine:

If I were you I'd hold off and see if it grows on me. Try taking it outside and looking at it in the late afternoon sun...it really is a gorgeous color.

You could always go Stealth. Just go buy a can of flat black Rustoleum....:eek:

Refinishing is not a good idea. The color isn't too bad, isn't really one of my faves, but you could either live with the color or hang out and wait for another good deal to come rolling along...

I'm maybe not understanding the problem.

I wouldn't DARE think of refinishing a Bongo, with it's painted neck & headstock. A bad job will kill the value and a good job (as if) would cost too much to justify the expense.

Stick with the DG and let it grow on you. If it doesn't, sell it and pick-up something more to your liking... :)

EB oughta rename that finish to "Rising Sun," huh? Actually, I really like that! "Check out my new Rising Sun Bongo that I bought today." It has a nice ring to it.

I like the new pickguard option
But The DG just isn't 100% me if that makes any sense. I like neutral

anyone got a HH5 interested in trading?
