How often do you guys refret your balls? Does the nut need to be changed when you do so? Do you send it back to EBMM to get this done? or can someone else competent do it?

Yo Lionel!
I'm also worried about these things. It depends on how you use your guitar. I'm quite prone to this since I play every night. I think if you will install the same fret profile, you don't have to change the nut but if you want to put jumbo's then you really need to replace them. Which guitar of yours you want to replace?
Are the guys from Sinamex not good enough?
Hey I heard from them that your new Silo is coming this month. Hope to see it when it comes! Anyways have a great day! God bless!

Thanks! This was what I was looking for. Question is, if EBMM does it, I really don't mind letting Sinamex send my neck back to the factory for work. I really don't want them to do it themselves either. I was actually thinking of upsizing my frets, since the standard Silo frets are JUST NICE, and once they begin to wear, then they get a bit low for my liking... (either that, or I should lowert my string gauge... heh.) So with medium jumbos, I was wondering if the nut is tall enough or not...

It's for one of my 20ths... The frets are getting a bit vintage for my liking... Heh.:D

Yeah, my LE08 is due anytime soon.

Personally, I get my frets changed once... and that's when I go for stainless steel jumbos. I have stainless steel frets on two of my guitars now and I love them - both for their incredibly smooth surface and for the fact that they last a lifetime!
When deciding where to send you guitar, keep in mind that EBMM will "only" replace frets and not change fret size. Hence, If you prefer bigger frets you need to look elsewhere. If you, like I did, decide not to send your EBMM to SLO, I suggest finding a place with a PLEK machine - the work it does is downright amazing!

Cheers

How often do I do a refret? Never. I have never felt that any of my guitars needed them. My acoustic is over 20 years old and I used to play it all the time (prior to getting my Silos) and the frets are just fine.

I played a Fender Strat in a Jam night the other week - without even looking at it I could feel that it needed a fret job - note I didn't say refret. Every time I bent a string it was like the fret was corrugated!

You can get away with a number of fret stonings before a refret is required.

I gotta a guy here in Cardiff that will do a great job - but I guess you don't want to come all this way !!!

I unfortunately go through frets like others go through strings! i probably average about 6 moths before a refret is needed. Dont know if it is hard playing or acidic fingers?!

I've never needed a refret on a single guitar, and that includes the ones I've played for almost 10 years.

Why you didn't like Malcolm's work? Care to elaborate? I know he always uses a specific type of frets, but I thought his work is one of the best locally?

Do take note if you send your guitar back to EBMM for a refret, they'll only use the same type of frets... You can't specify what type of frets you want...

Do keep me updated on how Sinamex charges for it...

Thanks!

yeah unfortunately so!
Now that stainless are readily available i shall be going for those! I want to see how long they last! I guess part of it in the old days was not looking after my guitars so my sweat was eating them amongst other things.
Im not up on my periodic table but if there is a super strong metal id love that as my frets!

the one that is a 50/50 is my Q-4000 it was played HARD for a long time and started life with the Gibson LOW LOW LOW frets, same ones that were on the "fretless wonder" but the neck is slightly scaloped so its not that big a deal! anyone else got a Q X-thousand seres? (not the bolt on necks) WOW I just have to post the pic again!

Long story... search for it on SOFT. Don't want to clog up bandwidth here.:D

Lets just say he thinks he knows what a guitarist wants without being a guitarist himself and insists on it.. Note, I didn't say he does bad work. I just don't like what he does.

So guys, if I change the fretwire to something a little bigger/taller, I do need to change the nut right? Does EBMM provide unslotted nuts?
