Yeah...the bongo guitar was not something I personally would have gotten.
I know one of the rejected prototypes...I held it in my hands....cried...then passed it to someone else to hold....then cry....

That was the neck thru Petrucci. I have a pic of it somewhere.....:(

Koogs, I remember talking to you while you were holding that at the open house. We looked around and thought that with your training you could probably take off with it and survive among the brush in the hills around the factory for days and eventually get home with it.
Took a minute of thinking before you finally said naaah :D

I would have loved to see a Bongo guitar that got developed to the next stage. I'd buy one in a heartbeat, and I don't even play guitar.

But BP said "No way, it's not going to happen. Now sit down, shut up and eat your vegetables."

Or words to that effect.

The proto Bongo guitar is IMHO ugly because it's got the original, nearly circular shape and no pickguard. Looks like an M&M. The proto Bongo was like that too, and I think it's ugly. The final Bongo, after BP tweaked the shape, is much nicer, again IMHO. The lack of pickups didn't help the Bongo guitar's looks, either.

Gibson scale, neck-through mahogany AL with humbuckers

It was a one off that BP had designed with Dudley and Drew. He ended up giving it to a guy who did some consulting work for them. there was a thread about it a few years ago. that picture surfaces every now and then.

The guy ended up putting it on e-bay shortly thereafter, which wasn't all that well received. If you search threads about prototypes you can get more of the story.

Doesn't Petrucci play some prototype 20th or BFR on the Dream Theater "Score" DVD?

It was a special JP that had the then ultra-mega secret mahogony tone-block and the 20th Silo pups. BP created it specially for JP after one of JP's visits. Apparently JP was noodling around on a 20th and liked it so much that BP offered to make the hybrid 20th/JP... unofficially dubbed "the Sitrucci" by 2 knuckleheads from Troy, MI ;)... and after 25 other prototypes, developed into the BFR JP.

Wow, cool story! I had no idea. So, the 20th has a tone block as well then huh?
