We live in a fairly small apartment, so I can't use a big nice amp to play guitar - bummer since I used a Digitech/Marshall rack system with a 4x12 for almost 15 years. I therefore resided to using Guitar Rig 4 on my notebook with headphones for almost 2 years, but recently decided I need a real amp (with the option to use Guitar Rig's brilliant effects in a loop).

I got myself a used Blackstar HT-5 combo after reading rave reviews. Tube goodness and excellent built quality, yet 5 watts are still, well, loud ;). I anticipated however that the amp will be ok for clean and some vintage overdrive. Turns out that with a tube screamer it can go full shred and is the best-sounding small amp I ever played.

Why this conclusion? I just spent a full evening playing with my Pacific Blue Axis, and the guitars repertoire of different sounds and dynamics was perfect to feel into the amp. Frankly, the Axis was out on a stand and just the most convenient axe to grab, and I totally lost track of time.

Love the clean tones on the neck pickup, percussive, responsive, clear. And of course the higher gain modes, with transparent yet cutting cords on the bridge humbucker and my favorite singing leads on the neck pickup. I have modded my pickup selector so it doesn't go uo and down, but operates at a 45 degree angle (there are notches inside the electronics cavity to do this, great detail!) - perfect for rapid pickup changes as I love to solo on the neck. Kick in a tube screamer, and singing sustain comes back, even at apartment-conform levels. I played like in meditative trance and enjoyed all the subtle nuances the guitar showed.

But most impotantly, I fell in love again with the overall feel of the Axis. The neck is a good old friend already, the body is no fuss ergonomics, the tapered bridge saddles don't rub on my hand, and the volume knob and pickup selector are perfectly located. The small truss rod adjustment I needed to do due to the changing temperatures here was a breeze with the adjustment wheel and an Allen key that always lays on my amp. A tad higher frets maybe, and maybe a more durable neck finish. Maybe also a 5-way switch for some split humbucker combos (hey maybe start looking around for a roasted ASS? ;))

Sorry for the rather boring post. But it was a great relaxing evening thanks to my Axis. Thanks EBMM for such a guitar.

Can't agree with you more. Axis + HT5 is a great combination. I dont have the luxury of a tube screamer but I am very tempted. I use a Vox Big Ben overdrive from which I get probably my favourite ever tones!

I have been using my ALHH for the last few months but I am going to take my Axis back out for a gig tomorrow night just to let it know its still daddy's favourite :)

As for the HT-5, this is the amp I’m looking at right now. Either the combo or mini-half-stack.

Its not available from the chain I do business with, just 1 obscure, overpriced shop a couple hundred miles away.

I felt exactly the same with my Luke, when I upgraded my rig to make her scream :)

It's precious to have found a good tone source, congrats ;). The HT-5 takes many overdrives really well, I played around with several models through GuitarRig yesterday. I however found yesterday that all you really need is a gain boost - drive almost to zero and volume up on a tube screamer or overdrive pedal makes the amp sing when it's pre-amp gain is cranked up. And it sings beautifully. The Axis pickups complement it nicely.

I got mine used. With Berklee in Boston, there is always a chance some kids got any piece of gear on craigslist. The amp is worthwhile getting, in any case, and I only hear good things about the mini stack, too. No mods required, maybe just a little breaking in time for the speaker.

I was thinking about buying a decent US Strat next...but yesterday night made me seriously consider getting an ASS. Or maybe just switching out the volume pod for a push-pull pod to split the pickups.

Sorta like a New Guitar Day without spending any money on a guitar. My Axis is burried behind my other guitars at the moment (all in cases in a closet)......I might have to break it out this weekend.....

Oh.....and I would definately recommend doing the push-pull to split the coils. I did that to my Axis and love the added versatility it brings to the guitar. Heck....I had forgotten about that till I just saw your post above.

That happens to me as well, where I dont play one of my Balls for a while and then I take it out and you just get inspired to play new and different things. The HT-5 is a REALLY good amp, which I was almost 100% set on buying. I went with its bigger brother the HT-20 head and paired it with a Mesa 1x12 cab. It just has more headroom and especially the clean channel. That's really the reason I went with the HT20...and the price is not bad AT ALL. Cool thing about it was that you could buy it from Zzounds online and make 3 payments. I'm absolutely loving playing my Y2D and Silo Special now with a BB Preamp and Delay in the loop...also has a decent built in reverb which is also a plus for the HT20.

Silly boy. Why aren't you asking for advice from your canucklehead friends?

The Guitar Shop - Home

within a half hour of the big smoke.

I've been looking into the combo. Very promising.:)

I'm eager to try this. Too bad I suck at doing this myself, but it's a project for the future!
I am also determined to remove the shim plate from underneath the Floyd to make it a proper floating trem (it sits on the top right now). I am more and more used to having some pull-up capability. I'll certainly make a little picture report again, similar to my older Axis setup thread. Stay tuned ;).

Oh you have a BB Preamp? How is that baby treating you? How do you use it? I am most curious to hear some opinions on it when run as a boost into the overdrive channel and how the gain responds to it. Any input appreciated, I might pull the trigger on one if the verdict is positive ;).

I love the BB! It is very transparent and does not color your tone as other OD pedals might. It sounds equally great on the clean and distortion channels of the amp. Just take a look at the demos that Andy Timmons does...that's really what sold me on that pedal. It's perfect for the Hendrix stuff on the clean channel, and when you kick it in on the OD channel, it's sustain for days. Get one! :D

I keep hearing good things. I am however mostly interested in using it to boost the high-gain stage of the HT-5. It's a nice basic overdrive, but it really starts to sing with a Tubescreamer or a Gain Booster in the +20-30dB range in front. I hope/anticipate the BB Preamp should provide a substantial gain boost range and add flexibility to help me tweak the distortion. My final dream would be a solo tone a la "Images & Words"-era John Petrucci meets "Back to the Light" Brian May. Andy Timmons is great and I love listening to him (great phrasing!), but for my personal tone preference that one's too gritty.

The Axis is in any case a wonderful platform for all this ;).

I think the BB is very versatile, and it's not going to make you sound like Timmons if you get it...tone wise. It's great because it is so transparent and warm and can give you an insane boost if you are on the OD channel. It has a good amount of gain on its own which yields a very nice crunch if you are on the clean channel. Being able to cut and boost the treble and bass independently is also a very big plus. I think you would be able to achieve those tones you are looking for by dialing it in.

You can also look into the Suhr Riot pedal...that thing is amazing on its own! Need to get me one as a second High Gain channel.

I have received my ordered BBE Green Screamer today. It's basically a TS808 with mods and a cooler casing. What can I say, wow. My Axis really sings in the overdrive channel, wonderfully. The pedal has already enough boost and the Tone known allows some coloration. Very happy!

Bit you made me more curious now about the BB preamp. Its EQ and clean boost properties would make it a great addition to this setup for increased options. I am looking into getting one used, or otherwise bite the bullet and go new.

I hope I can record some Axis vids or at least sound samples!
