If you're going with the car analogy it's pobably worth pointing out that whilst
they aren't relic'ed as such,In Europe we've got the 'new' Mini Cooper, the 'new, VW Beetle, and the 'new' Jaguar S type.
Whilst over in America you have the 'new' Ford Mustang, and the 'new' Dodge Challenger. All of which whilst featuring modern engines and running gear have all been styled to buy into that nostalgia for a bygone era.
It's kind of a retro 'lite' deal 'get that vintage look without the hassle of a car that won't start'
It's all gone a bit far if you ask me.

Wood is an amazing material.
Why on earth would anyone want to put a ding in it ? If I get a ding on any of my guitars then I'm in a mood for a month.
Some halfwit wants to smack a guitar off a couple of walls - I'd be looking to do the same to him.
Regardless of what brand you prefer the thought of purchasing an instument with fake-wear is mental.
When you play over time your instrument will develop wear in certain areas or "wear spots" if you buy a relic'd the wear isn't going to be where your wear would be!!!!!!!
KIDS DON'T DO IT - Buy something with a nice finish and keep it that way !
Anyway I'm off to put my 335 on evilbay or trade it to get a luke or 20th silo.........

With few exceptions, I like new guitars - I don't like all the sloppy bridges and creaky necks of vintage ones. Last year I got 3 vintage ones at a yard sale - a 1961 Gretsch, a 1965 Fender Jaguar and a 1961 Gibson. The gibson is awesome - solid as a rock, but the gretsch had all these weird switches and a lousy neck profile like an acoustic. The Fender had this really poorly designed tremolo bridge with a built in mute and too short of a scale. These weren't beat up instruments either - they we're museum quality - I sold the gretsch and the fender to two different people for a combined total of $5000. I kept the gibson - neat little axe.

I guess I'll chime in here... I'm of two minds regarding relic guitars. On the one hand, I think that buying a guitar that's intentionally distressed just so that it looks or "sounds" old and played is ridiculous - I too prefer to relic my guitars the old fashioned way; by playing the crap outta them! I also tend to keep my guitars out on stands or hanging on the wall or just propped up in a corner somewhere when I'm not hauling them off to practice or a lessons or a gig, so they all have the odd nick or scratch, and it's no big deal...
On the other hand, I can understand the appeal of relic'd "hero" guitars, like the Rory Gallagher Strat or Jeff Beck Tele. The relicing in these cases is more an artistic process of copying an existing instrument that belonged to some guitar hero or another, and I "get" that... I myself have long wanted one of those mirror image Hendrix Woodstock Strats that Fender put out ages ago - not as a gigging guitar, but as a work of art and a touchstone with my guitar hero. (note: I've been to the Experience Music Project twice - all the way from Ottawa! - and I could just hang out there for days with all the Hendrix stuff Paul Allen has there)...
Granted, I'm not going to have the kind of money these custom shop artist instruments cost any time soon, but I don't begrudge anyone else the right to blow their money on cool toys. And paying a $500 upcharge for a guitar that merely looks "old" is still kind of silly, imho...

)But what makes sense is the origin of the relics:
I read ( maybe BP can confirm this?) that Keith Richards once wanted Fender to make exact replicas of his old Teles to use them on tour because the old ones are beaten to death.
I know that Sting has one of the first Precisions ever made and had this one copied too.
This makes sense to me if you own the original and want to save it for the recordings and not loose or destroy it during the 10th world tour you do.
But playing a relic in a club and having to answer the kids Qs after the gig what year this great vintage guitar is and having to say it´s a worn in 2006 would gimme some red in my face.
