Been checking out other manufacturer websites, & quite frankly, I don't see the attraction of a $2,000 to $4,000 brand new instrument that looks like 20 miles of bad dirt road. Joe Strummer might have had his Tele since he started playing, & dinged, dented, DIY paint job etc etc, but I sure don't want an instrument that looks like Sh** out of the box. Then there are the people who buy a brand new beautiful instrument, & proceed to thrash it to make it look 30 years old. Just play the crap out of it & age it yourself naturally.

Thanks BP for not doing anything dumb like this.

I have to agree with you on this. If you didn't put the wear on it yourself then what is the point. I am surprised this marketing idea was a success.

People love antique furniture too. I've spent more than my fair share of time hitting brand new furniture with chains and sanding the paint down to make it look old. What ever makes people happy, in my book.

i feel everyone is entitled to their own opinion... likes and dislikes... to me, i just see relic as plainly as some people like blue dawn (guilty) and some like the candy apple red... i dont know how some of you like the lavender pearl... but hey... its your opinion... and i wont try to understand why you like it... my point is that... why make a thread bashing on someone else's preference... why not leave it be... and let them enjoy their own decisions... and i promise i wont bug you if you like lavender pearl... i have my blue dawn... :)

+1 There seems to be something in the human condition that causes people to put themselves into groups -- religion and politics are two good examples -- and look down on outsiders.

Sure, we are joiners, we humans, for the most part. No other animal would come up with the idea of a volunteer fire department.

I don't think a beat-up old Fender looks bad, not do I mind an honestly mojo'd up Stingray. I wouldn't go out of my way to do that to a bass in good shape, but anyone else wants to? Go nuts. It's your instrument.

Jack, I agree that we are social creatures and that is a good thing as you rightly pointed out. I guess what I'm getting at is the exclusivity that we create within our social groups. This forum is a good example, and I am as guilty as anyone else :) Just an observation.

Right! I've never felt the need to buy any, but gave a couple of good examples in my last post.

It's not just instruments either. My singer is also a home/business cabinet designer and builder. And he says people have also been requesting relic'd cabinets and hardware for some time too.

Relic's

Well Most people under 40 don't or won't get the relic thing. As an Original owner of over 200 vintage fender basses all 100% stock, I do understand the relic thing and it's like this.

In todays world the average guy or Gal can not afford a 1960 Fender Jazz Bass or a P Bass, the market is now out of reach. So for a fraction of the cost Fender/Gibson has tried to copy the vibe of their famous guitars. As an owner of real ones yes I don't get it either but I understand.

Now for $2500 to 10K a Kid now can Have a Paul Like Page or a strat that looks like Claptons without Paying 300K

Music Man Basses are a total different Vibe and soul. Ernie Ball Is doing just great
with what they are doing and Has no need to even consider such an instrument as a relic, My guess is it'll never happen in My lifetime and thats fine. What they are doing now works., So why mess with it.
Hope this helps. DJ

Someone really needs to relic a bongo!
I can't wait 30 years to see a bongo that is vintage and looks all old, beat up, and historic.

I'm going to predict that todays basses won't look anywhere near as bad when they're 30 yrs old.
Todays instruments have practically nuclear-proof finishes, and chrome rather than nickel plated hardware which will hold up better. They won't wear the same.
