I'm getting my hands on a sweet MM SUB5 bass... but, yes, that aluminium pickguard...
Is there anywhere to buy a replacement plate?
I've seen many people replacing theirs but not a single place to buy one... before I get one custom made I thought I'd ask here.
Any ideas?

I've gotten several different colors from Pickguard Heaven:
Pickguard Heaven: Pickguards for Every Guitar
I have a SUB 5 and I had it refinished + I got a black and a clear p/g for it. You'll see the SUB 5 p/b under Musicman - then check the code for the different materials to determine the price. Good stuff! Good luck with your SUB - what color is it? I ended up using the clear one on mine because I want to show off the silver flake finish as much as possible.

You can flip it over and paint it any color you like. Only on the subs will they reverse and fit the same. I made one out of tort for $15.00

excellent, thank you! That will work nicely!

silver flake finish, interesting :)

The SUB I'm getting is black. The seller lives about an hour away so I'm meeting him next week and will see it in person... unless it's a dog I'll come home with it, and I very much doubt it'll disappoint.
I'll probably get a black plate. It sounds unexciting, but I really like the black on black with the very dark rosewood board.

I looked at your silver SUB5... I like it!
Did you also get the body modified? On the picture it looks like the slab body has been contoured a bit.

Yep - don't like the slab body, so I had a local shop do both contours before sending it out for paint. If you're considering a refin, consider the contours - I think my local guitar repair guy only charged me like $50 or something. I didn't want to even attempt it because I don't have the right equipment or the experience to do it right.

Does the bass still balance good after loosing some of the body weight?

Looks good!

I think I'm happy with the slab body.
I prefer contoured but it's not a deal breaker.
