I'm about to embark on some experiments regarding strange and unusual string gauges, but before I attempt to remove any of the nuts on my StingRays, how are they affixed to the bass? What's the best way of removing the existing nut?

Any thoughts on removal/replacement? My new strings are coming in in a day or two...

I'd just use Dan Erlewine's advice as it's written. Well, to be honest, I'd probably take it to a luthier I trust :)
