This probably belongs in the string section, but there are so few people there, and this only applies to basses anyway. If you moderators want to move it, fine.

I have thought about doing this for a long time, and now that I have I present to you Restring 101, my way of putting strings on a EBMM bass. Feel free to comment, suggest and critisize, and hopefully we'll have a real good guide in no time.
The guide will appear on my website, when and if I get around to actually making one:p

Strings are changed one at a time to avoid excessive stress on the neck. (The neck will bow backwards when a string is loosened, and removing all strings at the same time removes a lot of forward pull on the neck, which means that the neck will move a lot. And that isn’t too good.)

restring_01.jpg

1
Release tension on the string to be changed.

restring_02.jpg

2
(Optional) Cut off string right before it meets the tuning post. This step is not necessary, but it is much easier to remove the string without damaging the finish on the bass if you don’t have to get the tangled part through the hole in the bridge.

JB1 suggestion, soon to be photographed:
(Optional) Cut off string right before it goes over the saddle. This step is not necessary, but it is much easier to remove the string without damaging the finish on the bass if you don’t have to get the whole string through the hole in the bridge.

restring_03.jpg

3
Slide the string through the bridge hole, and be careful not to damage the finish.

restring_04.jpg

4
(Optional, only necessary when changing gauges) Check that the new string seats properly into the nut. Ideally the string will make contact with the nut for most of the bottom half of the string, and if the string cannot make contact with the bottom of the nut slot you need to widen the slot. In extreme cases, when going from real heavy to real light, a new nut might have to be cut because the nut slots are so wide that the strings can move sideways. In that case, send the bass to Jongitarz.

restring_05.jpg

5
(Optional, but never a bad idea) Put some kind of lubricant into the nut slot so that the string won’t stick in the slot. Very important on instruments with d-tuner. I like a pencil (B2 is good)because it’s cheap and handy. Others might use graphite powder or something.

Whip out a pack of your favourite EB strings!

Put the new string on, and 5 cm (2”) beyond the tuning post you bend the sting a sharp 90 degrees. Nowadays this is often not necessary, as string windings rarely come undone. However, it’s an easy thing to do and it gives you peace of mind. If you use strings with round cores it’s a must.

restring_08.jpg

8
Cut the string off 2,5 cm (1”) beyond the bend.

restring_09.jpg

9
Make sure that the angled part of the string points down towards the peg head. If not, carefully twist the string until it does. Make sure the ball end twists too! This is important, because a twisted core will make your string perform less than perfect.

restring_10.jpg

10
Insert angled string end into tuning peg center hole, start turning the key and pull the string back towards the bridge. Be careful when pulling on the string, don’t use pliers and keep the string as straight at possible.

restring_11.jpg

11
With the really big strings it is sometimes easier to grip around the peg to tension the string.

restring_12.jpg

12
When the string somewhat tight (but not tuned to pitch) push down quite hard just in front of the saddle to make a positive break point for the string.

restring_13.jpg

13
Tune to pitch and give the string a good yanking. Tune again and you should be done.

Beautiful, but where are the martinis?

I don't change strings without a martini. Ever.

Sorry to have to tell you this, Jack, but I am a sober alcoholic. So no martinis-while-u-string for me.

Btw, thank you for providing me with the strings to make this 101 (less the B, which I had one extra.)

Damn, I just restrung three of my basses and didn't read this first, could you post this again but use a left hand bass?

No, sorry, where I live we can't even get leftie strings, and tying the sting ends to the bridge looks sooo unprofessional. Also, those damn ball ends are a pain to get into the tuner peg holes...

2) have duh kid take yer computer monitor into the bathroom
3) have duh kid hold it backwards (facing away) pointing to the mirror
4) see duh pitchers in duh mirror ??? "Left Handed, Right?"

ok, now

5) run back to the bedroom quick (where the bass is? Right?)
6) don't forget what duh pitcher looked like
7) have duh kid turn the monitor around (facing away from duh mirror)
8) you still remember duh pitcher, Right?
9) have duh kid read duh instruxions

I gotta suggestion....

When cutting off old strings, would it not be better to cut them at the bridge?

That way you only have to pull 2" or so through the bridge, reducing further the risk of damage to finish.

All depends on whether you want to keep the olds strings as spares, but I would have thought method shown (i.e. cutting string near curled bit from stringpost) would reduce the string length enough to make it useless anyway.

Just an idea, one I though of recently and am quite proud of :D

JB, that is probably a lot better, so I'll change the text. New pic will also be fixed soon. Thank's man.

I have started to cut them by the bridge too, after 3 years of not cutting them at all ,heh.

For anyone who likes No scratches, and No cutting,

- try 2 strips of (detacked) 'Scotch' tape (e-z peeloff)
covering the tail of the body behind the bridge

- as an added precaution, I set a business card on top of the tape
where the ball end 'wants' to scratch the body, and
the laws of physics being what they are,
the card slips away from the bridge and into my hand
as I pull the ball end away from the bridge with my fingertips
~

BonusTip for the Total Purist
- I also wrap my 'baby' in a sratch resistant flanel blanket before commencing any 'pantsoff' examinations and procedures
~

Hint to BP
1) - an Official MM Polishing cloth would be a great
Happy BarreNaaked Day gift for all Official MM FantastikFanatiks

2) - Official MM Jammies and Blankies would be great promo itemz,
or at least thoughtful gift or 'go-away' itemz for us
to help smooth troubled waterz with our (ex-)wives ??
