So I applied the oil and wax even with my initial baflement of the warning labels on the bottles. The result came out VERY good, and the neck is like glass as others have put it on the forum before. All I did was apply the oil on th neck WITHOUT any sanding or anything and I rubbed in the oil as much as I could. OF course I did not put tons of it, but I put on like 2 coats. I waited maybe for 5 mins for it to penetrate and settle into the wood. When I felt the neck after the 5 minutes I was scarred because it was STICKY like glue, so I started wiping it away furiously with some Bounty and it was becoming smoother. Than I put on the wax which I also rubbed in as much as possible and left it on for a little while and just wiped off any excess hat I did not FULLY rub into the wood and basically dried out the neck from the wetness of the stuff. So I have NO idea why someone wouldnt put Wax on the neck, because if I didnt I would be stuck playing only in one position due to my hand being glued to the neck. Now the neck has more luster to it which I LOVE and it is a bit darker and plays GREAT. HONESTLY it does not feel like before the PURE smoothness, because it has the oil and wax on it now. Before I just felt dry wood that was REALLY smooth. So now I feel happy that the neck is sealed more and it feels just fine and it looks great too.

No problem man. These kind of things are really not too hard to figure out if one has some common sense. And I doubt there is ANYBODY here that plays guitar that has no common sense, otherwise HTF can you play guitar?!?!? lol
Same thing goes with setting up a guitar, but you have to practice it and get enough of GOOD information on how to do it.

Hey Roubs - nice one I'm glad you're happy with the finish.

The reason why I said not to use the wax is that it gave a different finish to the way the neck came from the factory. - it is shinnier with the wax but it felt different to me.

I preferred the way it came from the factory but as they say "horses for courses" and if you're happy then "job done!".

I too freaked out when I felt the tackiness of the oil after I had applied it and let it dry.

It would be great if the guy from EB who does the necks in the factory, "spilt the beans" on how it's done.

-Anybody observe this on the open day ?

-Anyone wanna buy some wax ? lol!

Yep, it's not a big secret. It's been documented elsewhere. I was very curious because I've been doing my own necks and wanted to see if I was doing it correctly. I spent about 20 minutes at that station and actually talked to the woman who was doing the finish on the necks.

She applied the oil to the neck wiping a coat over the entire neck and I'd say within 15 seconds she grabbed a paper towel and wiped it off. Then she applied the wax, let it sit for 10 seconds or so and with fresh paper towels wiped it clean and then with another paper towel she did a final wipe down and moved to the next neck. If you blinked she was moving on... I was surprised by how fast she was doing it and asked is that all there is to sealing the necks and she said yes that's it.

I did my AL two nights ago and it's ready to rock. Oh and I used my bare finger to apply the oil and it hasn't fallen off yet... ;)

Really sweet... I'm trying to find some time and get some pictures up. I set it up with 10's and refinished the neck. The body is incredible, not a blemish anywhere, but it has been played. I'll probably be shipping it back to SLO for a refret in the near future. I had Tommy check it out this weekend and he concurred.

Sounds like you got yourself " a keeper" then?
I just got back home with my new AER acoustic amp which makes the piezo on the AL really sing and thats all I'll be using it for (not for the mags).
Great amplifier! Sounds so good yet so small - just like me :D

Oh yeah, this one's a keeper. As are all of the ones I currently have.

I will get pics either tonight or first thing tomorrow morning. We're going camping this weekend so we've been busting hump getting everything plus kids together. It's always crazy the first trip out.

I'm still deciding which guitar will make the trip this time. I'm leaning towards the Petrucci or the Morse. That little Roland is a great amp for this sort of thing. It sounds like you picked up a sweet one too!!

later...
