So, I finally got a chance to play a BFR Rosewood this afternoon. The Fountain Valley, CA had a nice selection of EBMM guitars and basses. I tried out two JPs, one with the rosewood neck and one with the standard. Both were killer looking Mystic Dream color.

I must say, not to disrespect, but I didn't really notice much of a difference. Granted I was playing out of some crappy Bogner amp, and there was a lot of noise at the GC (go figure :D) but I thought the feel was rather similar.

I don't mean to sound like a jerk-off here, but I am sincerely inquiring, what is the appeal of the all rosewood neck? Is there a sonic difference I was not noticing?

(BTW, I also tried a few other guitar brands... but I keep going back to the EBMMs... Silos, Axis, JPs.... no wonder why us knuckleheads are so dedicated.)

At first for me the appeal was it's uniqueness. At first I also didn't feel a major difference when playing versus a standard neck. But even during my "test drive" I started to get more comfortable with it, and started to really like the feel.

They say that as the neck wears it becomes even nicer to play.

Now almost a month after I got my RW Luke, I can say that I may never go back to a standard neck.

Not sure what it is or how it is come to that, some say that there is a sound difference, some say it's the feel.........

well besides from the unmatched buttery smoothness to the touch I think there is a significant increase in warmth to the tone and I find it much easier to get harmonics, I think the only negative thing I have to say is that it has the potential to get a muddier sound sometimes, I think this applies to both my old Rosewood ASS more than my JP, but they both have this little kick that I havent found in any other guitar:D

I was just about to say that

I thought GC didn't carry any Bogner other than his collaboration with Line6. That's what they told me just last week. They do however carry Egnator which uses the exact font as Bogner. In fact unless you actually inspect it closely you would assume they are Bogners. They had them in their high end room and all over the store in Boston.

Edit: I'm wrong, or more accurately the GC salesman was wrong. Looks like they carry the Bogner Alchemist series. I've never hear one but based on the price I'm willing to bet it doesn't sound like an Ecstasy or an Uberschall.

Oh and I find that the Rosewood has a warmer tone and a very different, though just a smooth feel as unfinished maple. It also seems to grow on you the more you play it. It's kind of addictive.

to me it definitely has a different feel. Not better or worse, just different. It gives a slightly warmer tone. I know I've said this before, but the rosewood feels heavier to me as well. When I hold both of my JP's in each hand, the rosewood neck definitely has more weight.

The Alchemist amps sound NOTHING like a *real* Bogner. I don't know what Reinhold was thinking when he designed those, but they really aren't up to snuff with his Custom Shop offerings.

I'll have to put together some clips of my Uberschall for you guys.

On the subject of the rosewood necks, it's definitely the feel for me. I took my rw neck jp6 to GC a couple weeks ago and A/B'd it against a maple neck JP6 and could immediately feel a difference. BTW, anyone looking for a RW neck EBMM in Cincinnati should head up to the Cincinnati GC. They've got a Pearl Redburst JP6 with RW neck up there that plays like a dream. And if it's still there, they have a Vintage SB RW neck ASS up there also.

I think the RW necks were offered as a fun limited edition. Just something to be a bit different. Not everything has to be a dramatic change, after all.

Now that's gonna be a sweet looking combination! I like the rosewood neck alot, it sounds a bit different, hard to describe, but it works well on my Axis SS which has a maple top anyway. Oh and then there is the looks! It's a head turner.

I also have spotted a SB RW Neck ASS, it was at the Guitar Center in Spokane, WA about 2 weeks ago.......(I was there on business).

As of 3 weeks ago, there was a Mystic Dream JP6 with RW neck at the GC in San Francisco

Maybe we should start a "Rosewood Neck Spotting" thread????

Not a bad idea, though I kinda want to keep them to myself. ;)

Hmmmmm, good point......

On second thought, maybe we can just pass info on the ones we don't want or already have........:D

At least they might go to a forumite and we can swoop them up at a later time......if they are so inclined (or persuaded).......;)

True enough. I had my eye on the JP here in Cincy, but then Poppa announced the DD2 guitars and I just about went postal. I'm still torn between about 3 or 4 different guitars. I'm just kinda hoping someone goes there and swipes that guitar so I have one less choice. Would make things much easier on me. But I LOVE the feel of the rosewood JP I have. Decisions, decisions.

There's two words you don't often see together...

Well, I think I may have been wrong, now that you guys mention it, the crappy amp I was using was probably not a Bogner. I did see some Bogner amps there, and must have just got that name stuck in my head. I had a hard time finding an amp that was not being used, and had a cable attached, so I walked around trying to find something available. I prefer Fenders, but there were no cables. Regardless, the amp I used was one I was not familiar with, and really did sound crappy - very lousy clean tone. Sorry Bogner fans, my apologies.

Don't be sorry. It very well could have been a Bogner Alchemist. They say Bogner on the front in huge white letters. I tried one when GC first started carrying them and was not impressed at all. The tone was lacking that thickness and depth you get with an Ecstasy or Uberschall.

Besides, Fender amps are great amps so your preference serves you well.
