Got the festival season off to a great start at the Russell City Blues Festival today in Hayward, CA. Russell City was between Oakland and what is now Hayward/Fremont, and was an important part of the West Coast soul/blues sound, and this festival celebrates that culture. I am the band leader for Frankie Lee, an important figure in this scene. We're losing many of his generation every year, I cherish every single gig I play with him (6 years now).
So naturally, I broke out the Rosy ASS, now equipped with DiMarzio 36ths PAFs. Backline was provided, I chose a Twin, plugged straight in. The neck pup really shines though the Twin. It's got a character all its own, creamy enough for leads, but focused enough for some rhythm as well. Middle position for ca-chinks, in-betweens for funkyness. Lots of that today.
Onto the pics:
Working the frets high up here:
Nice shot with Kevin Burton on keys, he toured with Freddie King:
Singing autographs, nice shot of the shoes:
Pic with Fillmore Slim, who I've backed on a number of occasions. Look him up for his colorful past:
Thanks again to BP and crew for such a wonderful instrument. I got many sincere compliments from fans and other musicians on the overall tone, one called it "pure".
I really would like to get my hands on one of the new AL HH's, but none in the Sac area yet.
Enjoy!
