Yes, I might have over-reacted, but I'm frustrated as can be with my current set up and telling me to set everything flat and make small adjustments is exactly what I did before arriving at the increments I mentioned in the other post. I think people read only the "Hendrix" statement and started typing without reading the rest.
Distance from my cabinet shouldn't make one bass sound very difined and punchy and the other muddy, I wouldn't think.
I have played this club several times, it is a "boomy" room, but I've never struggled with my tone so badly.
I cannot NOT hear what I'm playing and be happy about it.
Can anyone answer the B string question for me? I get these "overtones" ringing when I play the open B that I don't hear on my Warwick. These aren't my first 5's, I've been playing for about 25 years in various styles and have owned 5 strings from Peavey (one of the first year TL5's which I'd give anything to have back), some from the "F" that apparently no one here mentions;) and an Ibanez. I don't recall having that ringing with any of them. could it be the factory strings?
As for my tone, I'm going to try some compression and then I'll try a different cab, maybe the 410 Neo from GK doesn't like 5 strings, but I'd bet the 212 does.

Yes you did over-react. I understand that you may be frustrated, but that gives you no reason for taking an attitude with people who are trying to help you. I saw no-one getting rough with you at all. Still aren't even after you have given them cause.
Think again! Distance from the cab WILL do amazing things depending upon several factors.
Honestly I'm a little gun shy now about answering any of your questions, but here goes...
People have tried and tried to answer your questions about the "overtones" or whatever it is you are hearing on your B string. They said quite simply to start with a flat EQ and season to taste. Try it again!
Also, I know the factory strings sound great, but if they are possibly a factor, try different strings. I like the factory strings, but they feel a little floppy to me, so after they die, I will replace them with my brand.
If all else fails...send me your SR5 and be done with it.:D

Actually two people have addressed the "overtones". I am assuming it is the string. The live sound and the overtones are two completely different things. The overtone is present when the bass isn't plugged in, it's high pitched "whaaang" kind of ringing.
Now as for the amplified sound, as I tried to make clear, I did all the things you all recommend about the EQ on stage and I spent a long time yesterday working on taking the mud out. Ran everything flat to cut on the bass and absolutely flat on my amp and the contour dialed down and if I play with a really thin brittle sound I'm OK. It has to be my cab just doesn't handle the low freq. very well.

Now, I thank you for your input, but don't chastise me, your not my mother.

As for the reply from sterling.
I recognize your contribution to the industry and your accomplishments but your time isn't more valuable than mine and after all I am your customer. Don't forget that. It was your sarcastic remark to my question that got my blood boiling to begin with, now this last reply from you has done it again. It seems pretty arrogant. I didn't start the sarcasm or the tone and I apologize for it getting that way but I surely didn't ever say this bass sucks or that you don't know what you're talking about. I came here for actual help. I do love this bass, just want to get it right.

Rat, my Bongo advice comes from the fact that it is what I deal with everyday. I have had SRs and they opperate off the same principal... really. The SR preamps are voiced differently and is 9 volt, but there is a ton of tone in there available in small doses. Low end blooms out in a room. My stage tone is a twangy, but 3 feet off stage it sounds like a monster... nature of the beast (no pa support btw).

The GK can thump. I run 2 of them with no issues... but what it might boil down to is issues of taste and what you are use to (which is cool). The head is a bit tricky to get the hang of. The countour and presence effect the eq and vise versa. It will take some getting use to (I would work the eq sections first then countour and pressence). Hope you get it, itis a killer setup.

Well, here we go again, making me actually moderate.

If I leave this open.....we all know where that goes. Man, I hate closing threads, but this is just going to hell in a handbasket.

BP can of course re-open this, but otherwise, I'm letting people cool off. If you think I mean you, I probably do.
