I had a look at some guitars for sale privately in someones house recently. I found a musicman sabre 2 i liked alot but its in VERY poor condition, although the neck is straight and electrics good except for noisy pots. The fret board is very worn, also needs refretting. Paint work is worn and cracked, dents, scratches etc, and chrome work is very tarnished. I dont have any photos. It is black with serial number A003725. They didnt give me a price yet. If any one can give me information and approximate value of this guitar I would be grateful. Thanks, Gary, Co. Cork, Ireland.

Hi Gary-

The Sabre was made by Music Man, before the company was bought by Ernie Ball. From previous threads here, they don't have records for many of the guitars built before that time.

If you post the serial # in the sticky thread above ("IMPORTANT: My Ernie Ball's Serial # is"), the customer service guys might be able to look up some info about it, if they have any.

As for value, I don't think you're going to be able to get much info here. Might have better luck looking at eBay, etc.

Gary,

I hate to point you away from here, but some of the people on the G&L Forum (guitarsbyleo.com) also collect and/or have information on the original Leo Fender-era Music Man guitars. The original Music Man guitars were actually built by Leo Fender's company "CLF Research" and distributed by Music Man; when Leo pulled his investment out of Music Man he started making his G&L line of guitars and basses in the same factory and eventually stopped making Music Mans circa 1981 (he eventually retired the "CLF Research" name and only used "G&L" for his company name some time in the early 1980s).

EBMM is really a different entity with completely different models. On the guitar side none of the Leo models went into production; they are all the work of Sterling Ball (i.e. Big Poppa or BP) and Dudley Gimple and only the Sting Ray bass remains in production on the bass side - although if I'm remembering correctly the Sabre bass was also in production from EBMM in the 80s and 90s.
