Anyone know of any bad years of production for the Sabre? Any issues with the preamp or necks, etc? Is the preamp in the pre-EB models the same as the Stingrays? Can the Sabre reproduce a Stingray sound?
I'm considering picking one up, just trying to get some input before pulling the trigger. Any help appreciated, Thanks

I've had quite a few Sabres over the years and never had a bad one. Both the preEB and EB era Sabres can get a good Stingray tone. I'm not positive that the Sabres have the same preamp as the Stingrays but it looks the same and sounds the same so I'm happy!

Although the layouts of the amps in the Pre-EB Sting Ray and Sabre (2 band EQ) are different, I believe they are the same. EB has a replacement amp which is specified as a replica of the Ray. It's also specified for use in the Sabre. They'd have to be the same...or so close that it didn't matter. The very early Sabres also had black epoxy amps.

There was a problem with the truss rod in the very late Pre-EB Rays (1983?). I don't know if it extended to the Sabre. I've heard no negatives about the Sabre.

I 've had mine since it was given to me new in 1979,and I've yet to have any problems from it.
