I saw that one too....and I'm going to say, I've seen some repairmen do some nice fretboard replacements. It *could*be, But I'm doubting it.

Oli, this may be a bit off topic but I was in Japan a few weeks back and came across a few sr4's with ebony boards, I'm not sure if they are Japan exclusive or something but all black sure does look badass.
Might be worth asking around considering you're such a sr4 whore :)

As far as I'm aware...

Ebony was only used for Fretless necks and that was from c.1980 onwards (prior to that, the fretless necks were rosewood).

Fretted Rosewood was introduced c.1980 but before that the only fretted necks were Maple.

Narrow necks were only an option on Maple necks.

But with Pre-EB, you can never say never. I know they did one-offs for their dealers. I've also seen a few Fretless Maples which were not generally available as an option.
