Saddle Height Screw advice

Hi,

I'm new to this forum. I've got an MM EVH and, as of yesterday, a 2nd hand Axis Sport (non-trem). I've also owned an Axis Sport with trem back in 2001.

The Axis Sport I owned back in 2001 had one of the new solid bridge saddles... the non-trem Axis Sport I bought yesterday had an earlier serial number so I guess it was made a year or two earlier. Anyway, this one had one of those old vintage style bent steel saddle.

The non-trem Axis sports sound incredible but the saddle height screws are digging into my right-hand when muting the strings (they're sticking out in the outer 4 strings)

Do you know where I can find a shorter saddle height screws? Can the saddle height screws by Fender fit? Or is it best to replace it with the solid steel saddles.

I'm in Western Australia and it's very hard to find parts for MM.

First off- I definitely do not recommend screwing in the saddle, no matter how high ........


If the Axis saddles are like the vintage saddles (like on Silos, etc) then I would think that standard F****r saddle screws might work; and they come in varying lengths. I could be wrong though about their thread pitch and all. It also sounds like the neck may need adjustment. The question would be "why are the saddles adjusted so low that the screws stick out? " Maybe they aren't original and are longer? Or maybe the neck angle is off or you have too much forward bow. Another thought would be to grind the offending screws down some, then polish the ground ends, so they are flush in the saddle; if everything else is right with the neck.


I'd also suggest getting ahold of EBMM Customer Service and giving them a shot at helping you. I don't know the lenghts of stock saddle height screws but I bet they do.

Fender's saddle screws didn't work for me, but a call to CS and I had a several in variable lengths in 4 days.

Since this is overseas I'd recommend contacting a dealer near you, first. Dunno what the overseas CS policy is for these small parts.

Those are "M3" Stainless Hex Socket Set Screws. They come in diff lengths, like, 3mm-10mm so go to a hardware store and get a few to try. Sometimes it's advisable to use slightly longer set screws in case of the stripped allen head.

Errrrrm,

Anyone thought of taking the offending grub screws out (one at a time) and filing them down a couple of mm ?

Should be easy right ??

Take one out, file it down..... replace it to achieve the same saddle height, then do the same with the other screw in each saddle.
(That way you don't lose your setup)

Obviously you're filing the BOTTOM of the screw.


Just a thought.

I bought that EVH 11 years ago... the volume pot is on its way out (very scratchy). Any recommendation on what's a good volume pot?

Well, I searched locally, and in vein. Finally I contacted EBMM Customer sevice for some help, and they were very gracious for replying so quickly. Just wish I had gone straight to them in the beginning.
Big thanks to Nathan and Dan who are sending me a pack of saddle grubscrews (varying sizes) to suit my needs. I'm SO glad, as I didn't want to resort to filing down the existing ones.

Maybe a lame question, but how can you grip the little buggers whilst grinding them? A vice grip or pliers would mash the threads, and I sure wouldn't try holding them in my fingers, although I actually did try this while using a hand file. Is there a jig of some kind you would use?

Just thinking out loud ... but I'd put them on the hex key that fits, then put that in a vice.
