Hi!

I've just booked my first trip to the US this summer. I've always wanted to go and couldn't pass the oportunity up!!

Anyway, the plan is to spend a week in Vegas and then drive from Vegas to LA for the second week. I really want to go to San Luis Obispo to see the home of Musicman, even to just get a pic of me outside the building! How long do you reckon it will take to drive there from LA??

Matt,

If you are going to make the effort of going all that way, why don't you drop them a line and ask for a guided tour. I am sure that as a valued customer travelling all the way from the UK they would be happy to oblige!

I think SLO is 2-3 hours North of LA (by car) if memory serves. When I was there, there was a place that made the most awesome potato fries that tasted excellent with mustard (not many fries do). I think it was right by Pismo beach.

I don't remember much about SLO because I only pit-stopped there between San Fran & LA.

"the plan is to spend a week in Vegas......"

Yikes - a whole week in Vegas. I'm usually out of money after two or 3 days. There is a reason they call it "Lost Wages".

Anyway, the next time I go, I'm going to check out Ed Roman guitars. He has been aggressively buying up axes to make himself the largest guitar and bass dealer in the world. I can't wait to see that many basses in one place:D Check out his website:

http://www.edromanguitars.com/avail/bass/main.htm

Maybe you'll buy something there, stay out of the casinos and have something to show for your hard-earned bucks!

We'll be in Vegas for 3 nights in May. A full week is too long for most of us, but if you've never been there's some near by attractions like Hoover dam. Just pace yourself in the casinos.

I think the only problem with Ed, as far as I can see, is that he is a megalomaniac who doesn't understand nearly one single thing about guitars or salesmanship or simple human communication.

Also, he has his head so far up his ass that he's seeing daylight twice.

Other than that, good guy.

Homecoming!

I just went to San Luis Obispo (SLO) yesterday. I took my Stingray5 back home to have her frets evened out. Jon S. invited me to bring it down.

He took me on a tour of the factory. It's not that big of a facility. It's very clean (you could eat off the floors) and modern though.
I saw slabs of wood that would one day become Stingrays, SUBs and Bongos...They go through 70-80 guitars/basses a day there, and it takes about 6 or so week for a guitar or bass to get completed.

I came from Los Angeles, where it took me about a 3-hour drive (with no traffic), 200 miles. There's lots of good food around SLO (BBQ joints especially) and nearby Pismo Beach (seafood). Otherwise, SLO is a quiet college town - Cal Poly University is located nearby. Also worth mentioning is the seaside town of Morro Bay, which is out of the main freeway and is sort of secluded. There's a huge rock overlooking everything there that's the landmark of the town.

Amen brother!

I used to play a steinberger - and it was said with steinberger being bought by gibson the one of only a few people supplying parts for steinbergers was ed roman. my experiences with him have scarred me for life.

it took several hundred hours of therapy for me to recover.

it brings back many disturbing memories reading his name again......

ET, phone home, ET, phone home.

Stingraymundo-man, I have heard certain rumours about certain photo-taking activities. If you want me to host them photos for you, if you don't have space or whatever, I'm your huckleberry.

Send the original files if you can, I am Mr Photoshop and will optimize them for the web.

Ahem, that is, if such photos exist.

Photo Taking Activities

Yes, such photos DO exist! I will post the link soon here and in the Dudepit MM forum.

Jon was real cool (Sup Jon!), I had major buzzing on my E string and he pretty much made my bass look new (the frets are as shiny as when they were made!) But when I tried out the bass, the buzzing still occurred. Jon said, "I want you to leave here happy" so he did some super glue treatment on the nut. Still buzzing. So he ended up taking out my Rotosounds and putting in a set of Regular Slinky 5s (no charge for the strings). The buzzing's gone now...I don't regret coming in though cos I was really conscious about some of the dug-in frets, plus I got a tour of the facilities, which made me appreciate the Musicman brand in so many ways...
