sanding sub neck?

I'm planning to buy a mm sub usa.
but i just like the oiled neck on my mm sterling so much.
is it possible to sand the painted neck down to the wood, and oil it without messing up the bass?
experiences and tips are welcome!

Bassplayer in my Band plays a SUB 4 string bass and we sanded down the back of the neck and oil/waxed it. No problem so far. we removed the neck and mounted it back afterwards. The result was great, very close to a factory unfinished neck. We sanded rough first (200 or 400, can´t remember exactly) and later with 1000 and 0000-steelwool. Guess im gonna go for a real musicman stingray, i fond one with some damaged paint for 750 euros, with case. The subs are priced arond 600 so thats an easy choice for me. When i save up some money ill have that paintwork sorted out and ill have propper stingray. But thx annyway!

Personally, I really like the painted neck on my Sub. I've never understood the need to go to all the bother of sanding etc. IMO it spoils the look of the bass and will devalue it in the long run.
