Joe claims that his song '' If i could fly '' was stolen by Coldplay , because of the admittedly peculiar resemblence to their new song '' Viva la vida ''.

The news is posted here --> Satriani sues Coldplay for plagiarism - Music- msnbc.com

And a very enlighting video has been uploaded on youtube -->

[ame=http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=1ofFw9DKu_I&feature=related]YouTube - Did Coldplay copy Joe Satriani?[/ame] ;)

What do you fellow-forumites think? Steal or just a concidence ?

Hard to prove unless the chords underneath are more technical than on the average coldplay song. Can't imagine Chris listening to Satriani but you never know. Either way it'll be some good global exposure for Satch's music...the man's a genius.

Hey There - there is a long thread on this on Mike Portnoy's official forum. Of course it sounds like Satch - but there are so many pop bands that "cover" parts of some rather unknown great musicians' pieces... Just to think of how often Steve Morse has been robbed like this...

Besides - I don't want to start this fight here, but yes, of course it has been stolen, but not from Satch, rather from a number of classic pieces that used exactly this chord progression and this melody line over and over. That's probably where Satch's inspiration for this has come from.

BTW, if I were U2, I would sue Coldplay for working with Brian Eno and sounding exactly like U2 on "The Joshua Tree" and "Rattle and Hum" - now THAT would be a great newsmaker :)

what are the dates for release of Joe's tune and for Viva La Vida?

very interesting for sure. then again it is a common progression and could just be a case of the monkey mind collective.

Coldplay has a guitar player?

OK, that was sarcastic, they are actually a decent band. But seriously, I hear Coldplay songs on the radio a lot, and the guitars are usually very undistinguishable. I ususally just hear vocals, piano and bass and can barely make out what the guitar player is doing.

WOW. Those melodies are WAY close and the chords are dead on. I think he's got a case.

Coldplay sucks. I hope Joe wins a jillion.

There's only 12 notes...

(ok, I've managed to find the 13th, but it wasn't pleasant)

Point is, everything will sound like something else eventually.

Music has only so many notes. The coldplay song is original.

Now, "Ice Ice Baby" stole "Under Pressure". That was obvious. "Viva", though, is a different song from Satch's.

I love Satriani and dislike Coldplay but i don't think that the writer of the song took the chords from "If i could fly" and put words.
Its just coincidence.

Coldplay... Coldplay... Coldplay...

Ye I saw a video with someone comparing the songs a few months back but I didn't think anything would come of it.

Anyhow, I hate this band.
Americans seems to adore them now.
The good thing is I don't seem to have heard much from them since they broke America so yay!

Coincidence or subliminal influence ? You can hear a song, forget it but it is still somewhere in your mind. Thus a few years later, it can come back ...

I think this happens alot in the music industry. One example is Led Zepplin "Going to California" and Pearl Jam "Given to Fly".

[ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4ueegXM2yEQ]YouTube - Led Zeppelin: Going To California x Pearl Jam: Given To Fly[/ame]

Also, Pearl Jam "Yellow Ledbetter" and Kenny Wayne Sheppard "While We Cry"

It's either an homage, or it's coincidental. But, each song is its writer's/performers intellectual property, and they have the right to investigate it and protect it.
