Who is coldplay - and why should I even care? Mainstream American music is pretty unlistenable. I know I can't listen to 80% of FM stations without getting ill.

Love Joe, wish he would cross over to EBMM products. Sorry to see anyone have to use a lawsuit to settle something. But hey, that's the way it is. They'll figure it out.

Maybe we should all sue Coldplay for inflicting their dull, whining, pretentious chod on us all?;)

Coincidence my A$$

Hey everybody!!! I missed being here!! This definitely feels like home!!!

***Big KUDOS to Big Poppa - Mr. Brokenvail sounds PHENOMENAL!!! You have made him more of a man now that he's got BALLS***

Back to the topic at hand...it is my opinion that Joe Satrianni is a Musical Monster!! Not to say anything bad about Coldplay (the Mr HATES this band ) but there is no snow ball's chance in hell that Coldplay is that creative...

No suing based on chord progressions, right? Think of the so-called "rhythm changes" in jazz, based on "I Got Rhythm".

Melody and lyrics are protected, though. I think that's where "My Sweet Lord" got into trouble, the melody.

thats my thought exactly +1, the chord progression thing is passable but the melodies feel a little too particular to be random. i think coldplay wouldnt be too bad if there wasnt already radiohead.

you can't sue over a chord progression, I know of quite a few replicated chord progressions that were reused 3 times . Stairway, All Along the Watchtower, Smoke Two Joints..im sure that one has been used countess times... then I've noticed Cemetary Gates, Blvd of Broken Dreams and Mad World all have the same tempo and changes but are just in different keys.
I think what really strikes this as odd is the same tempo. But then again if Coldplay were actually trying to steal the song wouldn't they at least be smart enough to change that... I have a buddy from Germany who always claimed they stole "Talk" from some German techno band. Hard to admit but i'm a fan of Coldplay, but if they steal songs that is not cool.

Kissmyaxe you are right...the melody/riff/chords in "Talk" by Coldplay is from the Kraftwerk song "Computer Love".

I know the OP mentioned being 'Off topic' in relation to EBMM but, just to keep a connection of some form...

I haven't got any of Coldplays material - but i certainly take note when they are on TV great on Jools Holland live TV the other week.

There's not many bands in the charts amongst the hip hop/boy band/girl band [rap so let's not diss them too much.

They were very good when they played Glastonbury 2005 and although not a guitar orientated band, I feel that they contributed to the great atmosphere that year.

Should Satch sue? Well Zep were brought to "book" over songs that they "stole" - I'll leave it to the jury and let the lawyers earn big fat juicy cheques sorting it.

im sure coldplay got permission from kraftwork to use the sample of their tune so no copright infringements there.
its debatable but i suppose about the current song but there alot of songs these days that sound very similiar IMHO.

I finally heard the clip. Yeah, they are similar, but I think it is at best co-incidental. Satch is one of my idols, but I think he should have just let this one go.

Seems pretty blatant. But again, music is always going to end up repeating itself, god damn Pachelbel. :D

I think if Tom Petty could live with the Chilis "dani california" then satch can live with this. Yes it sounds like a complete rip off, but thats the way of the world of music. I could understand it if Satch was an unknown who was hard up for cash- but he isn't.

Who knows- maybe it could lead to an Indie/W**k-a-thon instrumental collaboration? :)

Hi Long time no post

but guys think about that : How many times have you wrote songs, arpeggios, riff and one day you are surprised to hear them on the radio ?

It happened to me once Steve Rothery being one of my major influence, I wrote on intro in a pure ROthery style with some Ebow and discover less than 2 month later that Marillion and Steve Rothery release a song call "You 're gone" with exact same intro. Of course I was kinda surprised hearing that but on the other hand it's quite "normal" digesting your influences and then thinking the music like your model. SO should I sue them ? or them sue me for being influenced ?

This is just coincidence as my song was never released and I don't think Marillion needs me to write songs aha h ahahaha

Same for Coldplay, I don't think this band need to copy someone especially for a hit single to me this is just a coincidence just a similar chord progresion with the "right notes". Coldplay and satch are miles away musicaly and I don't think Satch is a major influence for them anyway

see what the justice will decide anyway now
