I understand and have seen coincidences in music. I don't think this is one of them. The melody is exactly the same, only that Satch ornamented it. The rhythm of the accompaniment is the same. It's even in the same key! F# minor is not exactly a common one... EDIT!! The guy that edited that video changed the key to match satch's. The original is half a step lower... Could it be for vocal convenience? It's still too close... and again F minor is not common.

I know the OP mentioned being 'Off topic' in relation to EBMM but, just to keep a connection of some form...

you guys shouldn't forget the presumption of innocence ...

it's bad to declare someone guilty without even giving him the chance to explain himself ...

It sure sounds convincing, but I just can't imagine and artist with the success and stature of Coldplay resorting to blatant theft like that...my vote is for coincidence.

Satch sues.....which only tells me either he really thinks it is a blatant rip off or his lawyers talked him into it. Maybe the lawyers are behind on the ferrari payments...who knows. ;)

Not a fan of Coldplay....not in the least...but...until it is PROVEN it is only speculation and assumptions. We all know what it means to ASSUME. If not, PM me and I will tell you.

I just hope Satch continues to write great tunes and not let this be his focal point...like Metallica was with Napster. :rolleyes:

I did hear in a news report that Satch tried to do everything he could to avoid the lawsuit. I guess Coldplay's representatives didn't want to deal with it.

I think the fact that Joe tried to contact them months prior and got no response is admitting guilt on Cold Play's part.

I get the whole random use of chord coincidence, but when you place the 2 songs on top of each other and they sound great and not out of sync anywhere..... GUILTY!!!!!!!!!!

The only problem I have with this is tradition that goes way back... Bach composed around other people's melodies. So did Mozart, Beethoven, STRAVINSKY ANYONE?, and on and on and on. What about Jazz? Bebop as a genre practically exists from the practice.

As for chord progressions... don't make me puke. How many 12 bar blues songs are there? Who is going to sue who? When was Chuck Berry going to sue all the rock players for copping his double stop lick? I over use lick in blues based songs like crazy. lol

The other problem I have is.. I don't know how many times I hear a record and I'm like... "THAT'S THE EXACT THING AS XYZ...." JP's solo on Systematic Chaos is a Satch melody from the Extremist album. Is it a rip off or a nod? To my knowledge, no citation is given on the album or sheet music.

These issues just make me nervous. It can get self righteous really quickly. Sue for recognition maybe... maybe a little cash. I dunno... how far is too far in the other direction???

I think the opposite. If there was any guilt they would try to avoid this kind of press.

Moreover, why would they want to? As superb as Joe is.....why would they want to rip his tunes? Like them or not they are a group of very intelligent men who have written 4 albums of material and managed to keep to their own sound. They are too shrewd to risk something like this. They have also just released a album of tracks that DIDN'T make the orginal CD. They were hardly short of material.

My 2p.

things just got a little more interesting...

So if Satch wins this suit, does he then owe these guys the $$$? :eek:

Spanish band from 2001 (bonus that he plays an EBMM bass)...

[ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G57CgtX-BsI"]YouTube - ENANITOS VERDES - FRANCES LIMON[/ame]

and then there's this....from last year. Creaky Boards, a band in NYC whose concert Chris Martin attended last year....

[ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eUhFLiw6h6s"]YouTube - creaky boards + coldplay + itunes fiasco[/ame]

So I guess Satch stole it from these Spanish guys, Creaky boards stole it from Satch, and Coldplay stole it from Creaky Boards. Guess I'll get busy working on my take of the song now!

Also, I'm not a big Coldplay fan, nor am I going make a big deal out of it, but it's pretty painful to read how old and immature sounding many of you are by bashing Coldplay so much. If you don't like em, fine. I think many of you are just bashing them b/c they are successful, dude sings in a high voice, something you've read or heard, or the fact that they don't have a wanking guitar solo. Regardless, it's not your thing, who cares......pretty weak. :(

Not saying anyone's guilty or innocent, just interesting to see each side jockeying for position.

My personal stance is that it's coincidence, but I'm not a judge or copywright and patent attorney, so who knows how this one's going to turn out.

The Enanitos Verdes song is just one bar similar and only on the melody. Unlike the Coldplay-Satch case, where anything is similar EXCEPT for one bar on the melody, which is just a variation on the same notes. Even if Satch copied one bar from EV, it's too little for a lawsuit and I don't think Satch is profiting from one bar alone of his song. That might have inspired him to write the rest of the song, but it was still his work.

It may all be coincidence in the end, but if Satch tried to talk to them and they didn't treat him correctly, then he was right to demand IMHO.
